i just finished the most frustrating rebuild i've ever done.......and it was worth every second. i started friday at noon and wraped it up at 2:00pm sunday morning(went to the crest theater for an allnight blood movie marathon sat. night too)ALL BY MYSELF...NO CHERRY PICKER

cam went to .421

pistons up .30

weber32/36.

had the intake ported to the carb and polished , polished the intake side of the head

removed all the smog crap

running a solid 160 psi in all four cyl

the truck had a stock(?) 2" exaust so i didn't spend the money on a header(yet)

haven't took the truck back to my machinest to have it dynoed but it SCREAMS.i don't want to guess at hp and torque, but it will definetly haul my trailer around like a kid on a skateboard. doesn't really burn out but it barks second gear (i buy my own tires anyway)

i had one setback this morning after i had everything together .....forgot to put the keeper key on the timing chain tension adjuster   and it blew into pieces......had to jack it up, drop the pan, fish out the pieces and put the damn thing back together with the head still on. 8O thank god for long needlenose pliers.

i don't have a working camera at the moment but to tell the truth, the only thing you can notice is the weber and a lack of smog stuff.so i'll post a few pics when i get some sleep.

damn this was a long weekend.................

Sounds pretty awesome, how much did it all put you out, minus the carb? Interested in doing it myself, when I get a bonus check. Let us know the stats on it if you can too, I'd be interested in knowing what these engines are capable of. Thanks.

cost:
$650+tax all machine work, delta cam, .30 piston set and short block rebuild kit (all bearings ,wrist pins ,c-rods,remaned crank, every gasket option under the sun)
$75 weber carb(e-bay) rebuild kit and adapter, return filter
$25 misc. machine work(plugging manifolds, broken studs) 4;00pm friday too

I had the head remanufacured a year ago and just had to install the cam, took five minutes. weird....no bearings.....first time i've done a sohc before.sbc's have bearings....

gene(my machinest) assembled a dead short block(from the crank to the pistons) for me and i did the rest at home in my carpeted driveway(you know yer a red neck when....)

Man, if I could get a weber for $75 bucks I'd be allover that like white on rice and a paper cup in a snowstorm. I want one bad, but smogs gonna be a pain to get through every year. Where I live it's set a '67 or older, everything else needs smog.

keep your eves on e-bay, i only paid 30 bucks for my carb......that was the guy's "buy it now price"it was used but i got lucky and it was jetted right and was in good condition. cost another $10 for the rebuild kit,$35 for the adapter.

was a little too simple to set up if you ask me....i'm still thinking that it couldn't have been that easy.

Congrats to you with putting such an effort to get it done. Im glad to see that you're happy with the results. Stay on top of it and it should last you a good while. That Rocks!!!

My machinest put it on the dyno today and here's the verdict.

96 Hp.
113 ftlbs

___estimated____

not quite as much as i expected but it is a hell of an improvment.

i think it's time to bump up the gear ratio so i can use it like i should. anyone know where to get taller gears for a stock rear end?

You should have expected about 115 h.p. at the wheels, Maybe the running gear is dragging it down. When was the last time you serviced the trans and differential lube? Are your rear brakes dragging?
When i had rebuilt my stock motor (the early model Isuzu motor), I had no emissions except p.c.v., Weber carb, Machined intake, stock cam, stock exhaust manifold with 2" exhaust and no cat converter and a bunch of subtle, little mods done to it, i got 115 h.p. This was the dual timing chain Isuzu piece of crap of a motor. It only lasted 50,000 miles. You should be getting more from your motor. It doesn't take much to scrub power away so go thru the rest of the drivetrain/brakes and make sure there isn't anything causing any undue resistance.

the tranny is really fried in this thing...i had to put my old 4sp back in after i killed the 5sp i put in about 3 mo. ago.

when the clutch is pressed in i can hear nothing....smooth as a baby's bottom.
when i let it out in neutral there's this grinding noise like the input shaft bearing is fried.......and i sold my good 4sp to roadshow bob a few weeks ago.

i would like another 5spd but i dont want to blow the output shaft bearing like i did the last one,( i haul a trailer made of a 75 luv mikado w/my truck).if i could only find a heavier bearing set for the p'up 5 spd i'd be set since i still have the one i toasted.

keep in mind that the stock 1.8 is rated at 90 hp. or maybe it was 85? but anyway that rating is taken at the crank. you loose hp through your drivetrain. there is normally a fair amount of drop at the rear wheels. so thats a good bit of horsepower. by the way, is a delta cam a regrind?

well the delta that i put in had to be, cause my cam was not that pretty(worn) and when i put the new one on i had almost 3/16th gap that i had to adjust out.

on a related subject.... i finished the smog system today, when i put the pcv valve in , i had to readjust the carb dramaticly and gained a considerable amount of goose. the secondary's quit bogging and it seems like i'm using more of the fuel that's being dumped through the carb.

at dyno time i had not set up a pcv system or the evaporator either....when i adjusted the carb this last time i got it to idle down VERY SMOOTHLY.....Rock Solid ,the needle in my tune up tach wasn't bumping around like it used to. :D

i'd like to thank everbody that contributed info and bought my parts that helped me finance everything. i don't think this project could've been possible without all the help and encouragment i've gotten here.

well i am verry intersted to know more about you g180 that you reworked to make power out of it. i know there is a way and i am on a quest. my "Q" for you is was it hard to put the 5 spd into the luv. i am on the wokrs of putting a new cam in and a header and .30 pistons. i have the webber carb but it needs to be jetted bad i am guessing when i really go to take off it bogs down a second and then boom it goes but then when i let off the gas BANG it back fires and scares the livin SH!T out of me. i cant figure the problem out i was asumeing that it might need more spark but i didnt want to waste money on ignition and have it do nothing. about how much was this hole project your final cost.?
thanks
kevin

Ok....i wrote a big huge post to explain a few things but somehow i erased it on accident and i'm waaaay too tired to rewrite it.

bob..... thanks but I'm gonna go five speed again and do it right this time.

rms...well....there's alot to talk about on this subject. i have a few drawings and specs from my assembly and such. the total cost was in the neighborhood of under $1000 do yourself a favor and REPLACE EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!! The last thing you want is a gremlin in your engine breaking all the worn out stuff.get a full timing set cause if you do it later ...well you don't want to do it later....trust me...anti freeze and oil don't mix.

the five speed was hard to do.....but i didn't have a welder. i had it in high with a steel plate to extend the mount and i think that contributed to me frying the output shaft bearing.

ask whathver you want and i might have an answer...i'll keep checking this thread.

the fiver came out of an 82 p'up. depending on how you want to mount it you'll probably need a grinder and a welder to play with, making it fit right.

the hardest(most expencive) part was getting the driveline to fit. get the driveline out of the pup if you've found a donor vehicle cause the splines were different as well as a clutch disk cause those spines were different too.

so if you have a donor take everything from the flywheel back to the driveline and don't expect the truck to be on the road for at least a week.
