When I did my 79 4x4 I pulled the transmission from under the truck and left the motor in place. If you have the means to pull the motor and trans out together is does make parts of the process much much easier, but it means more work yanking it all out instead of just the trans.

To pull it the regular way, most of it is pretty easy. The only real hard part is getting at all the bolts holding the trans to the motor. The rest is just pulling off a skidplate and unhooking the rear trans mount. It takes a little wiggling back and forth to get the trans out so a trans jack really helps. I just used a homemade trans jack made with two scissors jacks and a couple of pieces of steel for a top and bottom. I suppose it is possible to do it by hand if you're the burly type, but I wouldn't recommend it.

When I replaced the clutch in my 80 4X4 I tried to take out the tranny, but couldn't get it to slide back enough to come out so I ended up needing to pull the whole motor, but I had some other stuff to take care of, like repairing some plug holes so I took care of it all at once.

If you can pull it all out. The crossmember that the tranny mount is on is welded so you have take this into account. Other than that, everything is vary standard. Good Luck! :D

When I changed mine, me and my boss spent a couple hours trying to get the tranny back enough to drop off the engine, but it just ran out of room because of the solid cross-member. It was just impossible to change on my truck without pulling the motor.

I managed to pull the trans alone, but maybe that 2 inch body lift made all the difference. I know it sure helps for reaching over the frame to get to a bolt sometimes, but I didn't think about how it affects pulling the trans. A little extra room under there always helps. The tranny jack really seemed to make all the difference for me though. With a jack at both ends I could tilt and turn things until I found enough space to move it all back. It might also help to have a jack under the rear of the motor, I think I recall using a bottle jack with a 2x6 board up against the bottom of the oil pan.

Other than my 79 4x4 I also redid the clutch on my 77 2wd, but that was done 15 years ago when the motor and trans were swapped in from another truck. Having it all out of the truck makes it really easy to get everything in there, lined up, and back together clean. Heck, just getting under that 2wd LUV is a major task and I'm a fairly scrawny guy. I can't imagine pulling the tranny out from under that thing, even with the front on ramps. It would take ramps on all four just to fit the trans out from under it.

the thing is they all do that unless you have the manual ordered from chevy itself the haynes and chilton manuals dont tell you how to get them out....the only way to get it is to rotate the tranny 90 degrees then drop and pull......the manual i have costed a hundred bucks and it says how to get it out without pulling engine

Is it possible to correctly align the clutch without pulling the tranny? I'd like to put the clutch on the engine I'm installing without pulling the tranny in the 4x4.

You should have an alignment tool and then putting the clutch in on the stand will work just fine. Once it is lined up and the pressure plate bolted down the clutch disc won't move.
