 Post subject: 80-81 Luv diesel
PostPosted: Sat Nov 16, 2002 11:41 am
I am considering buying an 81 Luv diesel and was wondering if anyone could tell me about them. Does this engine last a long time? This one has 92K miles and has been garage kept (rust free Alabama truck). It seems to run great it just doesn't have alot of power. But I was looking for fuel mileage anyway. I thought I might be possible to add a turbo from an Impulse or something if I ever needed more power. I would appreciate any information about problems, repairs to expect, or any history on these little diesel trucks. I have found nothing on the net about them. My plans for the truck is only ocasional light hauling.

Thanks for any help

welcome to the site, :)
i know we have at least 1 desile luv owner on the site, 92k isnt all that much if its been taken care of.
as for the impulse turbo, its been hashed around a bit but i dont know if anyone has done it. i had a turbo impulse once and i can tell ya now THAT thing hauled ASS
do a search (little button at top of page) for either turbo or impulse and you should find something

again welcome, pull up a 5 gallon bucket and grab a beer :drinking: :D

Hey if you are considering on buying the truck don't 2nd guess yourself because the Chevy LUV diesels are very reliable. The truck has 92,000 miles and that is like brand new. I own a 1982 LUV diesel and the truck was the best vehicle to choose for my first. They get 32 mpg city and 35 highway, and yeah they don't have much power but you won't regret buying the truck. The engine has 62 horsepower and if you are looking for a turbocharger, Isuzu made a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine with 80 horsepower for their 86 and 87 Isuzu PUP trucks. The engine is very rare, but try to look for the trucks in local junkyards for it. As for problems on these trucks there isn't a lot to say because they are awesome, but the frames rot out if you drive constantly in wet, rainy weather. Since the one you are considering to buy has been garage-kept I think that it will be like brand new. If you get it the engine will go guarenteed past 200,000 I'm sure. But i think they can go for a lot more. If you end up getting the truck, let me know cause I'll be interested in talking to you about it and if you need any more info just let me know.

Hi I also have an 82 LUV with a diesel engine. It has 164,000 mile on it and does not use any oil. The last time I checked th efuel economey I was getting around 32 mpg in city driving. The truck has been in our family since it was new and is then most reliable vehicle I have ownwd. I do have one question for someone that knows some thing about the motor. Why does it drip oil from a rubber hose on the right side of the engine? Othewise its a great truck.

I have that same hose leaking oil from it too. The hose is an oil hose that connects from the alternator to the engine. The reason why your's and mine are leaking is that the hose is old and needs to be replaced. I've tried to get the hose from Advance Auto Parts but I didn't have much luck. The best way to get this hose is to go to the dealer and get one brand new. After you get the hose you'll have no oil leak problems any more. If you got any more questions then just let me know, I'll be glad to answer any.

I'm curious why there's an oil hose going to the alternator or did you mean the turbo? And if you need a new one, can't you make one?

I didn't mean the turbo, because there is no turbo in the diesels in the 81 and 82 LUV. I know it sounds wierd that an oil hose is connected to the alternator, but this is a special alternator which has a vacuum pump that is specially for the diesels. I can get a hose made by a local auto parts store, but as for myself making the hose myself, I don't have the capabilities and right tools/machinery. I will try to get a brand new one from the dealer, which is the best way to handle the problem with the leaking.

Tim I wanted to know if you had any pictures of your LUV that you could send by e-mail? I have so much interest in the 81 and 82 LUVs, I'd be interested in seeing another truck like mine. Just e-mail me or post a message here to let me know about it. Thanks.

tsbelue I wanted to ask you if you're not interested in the truck, if you could give me the contact information of the person selling it? My dad is interested in getting another LUV diesel, because he likes the trucks. If you want to buy it no problem, I just wanted to let you now. Thanks.

luvdiesel,
I am sorry but I am not that computer savy where I know how to post pictures on the web, sorry. My 82 is in prety good shape for its age it is yellow and tan. There is very little rust on it except on the floor by the drivers side. Unfortunently my wife hit a deer with it this past summer though. It survived the accident fairly well for the speed she going when the deer was hit. It was back on the road the next day.

The hose I was talking about is on the other side of the engine close to the oil filter and it is about 3/4 in in diameter and runs down the side of the engine. I replaced my alternater this past summer and that hose going to the vacume pump was leaking up until I put the new aternater in.

Need help finding rarest part ever made.

I can not find anyone who can fix, make or find this special hose that you talk about.
I just bought this truck a month ago, was changing the alternator belt and caused the oil line to go bad. (I have inclosed some photos of my truck)
Any idea on where to get the parts to fix it? The part number is (94028195)
The hose has two banjo fittings, one is 12mm the other is 17mm. The 17mm side conects to the pump, the 12mm connects to the block.
