 Post subject: Crankshaft questions.
PostPosted: Tue Feb 10, 2004 1:15 am
I'm working on a Chevy 327 for my Luv. The other day when I was looking for camshafts, the mechanic asked me if the crankshaft was billet steel or cast steel.

He said you could tell by the wide of the mold marks on it. Does anyone know what he was talking about and why that would be important?

First a billet crank shouldn't have mold marks at all. Billet components are essentially parts that have been cut from one solid piece of metal (steel, alloy, aluminum, etc). Casting and stamping are processes used more in high-production manufacturing.

The difference between these two is that billet components provide the highest structural integrity, because their molecules and bondings haven't been altered. Casting components are always melted and molded thus reducing their integrity a bit.

i think the forged cranks go for about 500 bucks, so you would prolly know if you had one. if it is a stock 327 than it is prolly cast. which no matter what he tells you, should be plenty strong unless your gong for like, 400 or 450+ horse.

I don't know why he would even ask, When I did my 327 the only thing that came up as far as the crank was if it was small jernals or big, 4bolt or 2. Kinda curious what he was gettin at :?:

He was helping move the block to a machine shop to get it hot tanked. We were discussing wether we needed to have the crank turned or not. Sounded like one was worth a lot while the other isn't.

Why would that even need to be asked? I mean did the dude want to steal them?

thats too bad, I had a fresh machined .010"/.010 cast 327 large journal crank that I would have parted with for $80.
