I'm going to vent a little hear so please bear with me. I bought my luv about 2 or 3 months ago, just got the @#$% thing street legal last week. Started it up a couple of days ago and it started rattling. Took it today to have it checked out and the @#$ @#$% rod or main bearings is gone. We were getting metal shavings off the dipstick. So my #@$&!*$ new luv is $#%#@$$% dead now until I can come up the the #$@$%^% money to fix the @#$ @##$% thing. My wife is all pissed off and bitching because "I told you not to buy the @#$ @#$% thing". Well I was hoping this would make me feel better but it didn't thanks for listening.

I'm just going to use this for an opportunity to make it better. I am getting a crate motor so I know what I have this time. I can get about 440 hp for about $3000. That's what I'm going to do. Maybe I will make the end of the race season to try out my new motor.  Still pisses me off tho. I emailed the guy I bought the truck from and found out he built the motor, he probably won't be answering anymore of my emails. That really wasn't cool but at the time it was all I could do, had to vent somehow.

What engine was in it? Did he build the motor or was it one that was rebuilt?

It had, has a 350. He was the one that built it(the guy I bought it from). The motor had 5000 miles on it. :x

I think that's what I'll end up doing too, going with a crate motor. I have a 283, but by the time all the work is done to it, it'll end up costing more that just getting a crate motor.

same thing happened with my cousins truck(76 chevy with 350). he bought a truck and the motor was no good. he got another "supposed to be" good motor and we put it in. started it up and it ran like $hit. found out the cam was bad. had about 8 lobes that were off. so we put in a new cam and it ran good for about a day and started knocking. pulled it down and it was a rod bearing. so we pulled it out and rebuilt the whole engine. would have been better off rebuilding the engine that came in the truck. instead of getting the other motor. but on the bright side the truck runs good now and since i helped him he gave me the other 350.

He gave me this bs excuse, I think it was bs anyway, I don't know a whole lot about internal workings of a motor. I can bolt on about anything but going inside I have never done. I'm going to pull my bad motor apart just so I can look at it. He told me that it has a stock GM crank and the crank couldn't handle the torque the motor was putting out. Now granted it was putting out a hell of a lot of torque, but is that possible?
Crate motors are all over ebay, that is where I have found some really good prices.

I tore the top end off my motor today, still makes me sick, it was spotless. No buildup, no crap, nothing. The lifters haven't even worn the shiny off of them yet. Plugs were burning like they should. Haven't gotten into the bottom, so I still don't know exactly what broke yet. Gotta find a cherry picker somewhere first. At least the guy didn't lie to me about the motor being new.

If you pulled it apart before it stopped running on it's own, that's a good thing. Sounds like a rod or crankshaft bearing. If the guy did it himself he probably got a rod cap switched or didn't mike it in the first place. If you don't know what you are doing you can put them on backwards. I think you are probably right though. By the time you take it to a machine shop you're going to spend almost as much, and with G.M. you get a gaurantee.

By the way, the crank not being able to hold the torque is Bull&^%t.

I thought it was but wasn't positive so I didn't argue with him. Think I'm getting a cherry picker this weekend, I'm going to try to get into the bottom to see. Somethin else that sucks, I'm saving every dime I can for my motor and I can't do anything else while I wait. Go out and sit in it and make vvvrrroooommm sounds is getting old.

I finally got the old block out and tore it down tonight. Crankshaft had 1/8th inch groove from the #5 rod bearing. It was awful. But my new motor will be here this week so...........

Damn. That sucks. If you can swing it, rebuild the first motor. It sounds like the pistons and rings are still new along with the valvetrain and heads. You can take your time with it and it will be either a spare motor or a good deal for someone else. You can recoup some dough if you sell a fresh engine.

I agree with Blue Meanie, but take it a step further. Buy a new crank and bearings, and have a machine shop put it together. A good machine shop can set up the clearances, balance and assemble the shortblock, and you won't spend anywhere near $3000.00. You also won't have 440 hp.
