Hi all!

This isn't specific to the LUV truck, but rather an issue I'm having on my Isuzu Bellett 1800GT equipped with the G180SS engine. Near as I can tell, it's identical to the single cam, counter-flow G180S used in the early LUV pickups with the exception of the twin-SU carb setup and higher compression pistons.

At any rate, I get a massive amount of clatter on startup until the engine builds oil pressure. It lasts about 2 seconds on cold startup and you get just a hint of it on warm startup. I'm having a hard time discerning whether it's specifically valve noise or rather chain noise due to a lack of pressure in the chain tensioner. I would like to think that chain noise would be much quieter, but I figured it would be best to ask if anyone has had any similar experiences with this motor.

Any help at all is greatly appreciated!

One to two seconds (to me) points to the chain tensioner like you mentioned. In my (limited) experience with these engines, once the valves start making noise, it doesn't stop with oil pressure or temperature. They just keep ticking.

That's what I was thinking. I think I'll try switching to a thicker oil (currently on Mobil 1 5W-30), maybe to build oil pressure sooner. Save that, I may pull out the tensioner spring and replace it with a heavier spring. The spring is just to keep tension on the chain until oil pressure builds, but if the spring is weak (from being 45 years old) I can see how it would let the chain bounce around and make a racket.
