My nephew bought this truck off a guy who said this was his dad’s truck. As the story goes, the guy was in his 70’s back in the 70’s when he bought it new. His dad drove it around and, after he died, it just sat in the barn for years. My nephew bought it when he was 15 with plans to drive it when he got his license. In the year leading up to him getting his license, he started to realize what it would mean to have a daily driver that didn’t have air, CD player, cup holders, etc. I ended up trading him a 2000 model truck for it and I told him he could drive the Luv every once in a while.

It’s a ‘76 with 38k on the clock. No one really knows if it has rolled over or not, but the guy said he didn’t think his dad drove it nearly enough for it to have 138k. I want to talk to him to get enough info to do the math to get an idea of how many miles and years he drove it. I don’t have any experience with a Luv so you guys may be able to give a little input on how many miles it looks like it has.

I’ve rebuilt the carb (still not 100% smooth), rebuilt the calipers, put an alternator on it, and that’s about it. It’s pretty much complete from the hood emblem to the dome light to the spare tire. I still have to get tires(dry rot) and the tail pipe is a bit rusty. It doesn’t have a cat, so someone has done a little work to it.

I definitely need to get some hubcaps! The current ones are off a poncho, but, as far as I can tell, it has the original Luv wheels. They have slots around the perimeter and three knobs that look like they are for holding a smaller hubcap. Also, the wheels are painted silver, but it looks like there’s white paint under that.

A couple of questions I have are what did the original hubcaps look like, and does that look like the original seat fabric? The seat fabric is a bit dry rotted and has a few splits.

Thanks,

Trey

I agree with Drummer.

There is no way that has 130,000 miles on it. There's just no way that dash pad would have survived intact in that much sunlight unless it was only driven at night and kept in a garage during the day.

I have never seen a Luv dash pad that wasn't cracked.

Yes those look like original wheels. Is that a plastic dash cap?

Nice truck!!
Rondog,I'm pretty sure that is not a dash cap unless someone took the time and effort to cut out the perforated speaker section between the defrost vents.
And yes, that is all original interior.

That’s just a good camera angle. There are a few cracks in the dash.

Here are a few pics. One of the odo and a few of some common wear items.

Thanks to all for the compliments. Ripper, I like the green and the step side. Nice truck.

I’m trying to figure out what to put on the wheels. All the pics of 76’s seem to have the full size hubcaps. But, it does have the 3 lugs on the wheel so that leads me to believe it may have come with the flat dog dish style. Is there a chance it could have come with wheels with the lugs but with the full size caps?

Historically I’ve dealt with Mopars and just kinda stumbled over to the dark side. All Chrysler’s came with a build sheet, usually tucked under the seat springs. Does the same hold true for a LUV?

I think these are the 2 possibilities:

You've got a really nice dash and a complete dome light. Your truck is already nicer than 98% of them out there. Lol. Nice find indeed.

The full wheel covers on an original owner luv I worked on had the 3 point wheel. I suspect they came that way to cut costs...

I just noticed something. Your truck has 1975 tail lights and a 1972-1975 instrument panel, but it most certainly has a 1976 or newer engine.

1975 was unique in the tail lights in that there are no amber turn signals. There are two red sections (brake and turn) and a white section (reverse). 1974 the tail lights were horizontally under the tail gate (which made them VERY hard to see if the tailgate was down), 1973 had round tail lights under the tail gate and 1972 had a funky setup of lights and reflectors all over the place. (say that last bit in Jack's voice from Will & Grace)

1975 was the first year they put the tail lights beside the tail gate, then in 1976 they changed the turn signal lenses to amber and they stayed that way until the redesign for 1981.

1972 - 1975 the instrument panels were pretty much identical to what you have. 1976 they went to the same system I have of the 3 round sections.

At least that has been my experience. If someone has more accurate information, please feel free to correct me.

That is the insterment panel of a 76. Most defentaly not a 72, that was a one year only.

Really? So they kept the original style gauges but updated the engine?

Ok, time to update my knowledge bank.

And I never realized the 72 had a unique gauge cluster. Never paid much attention to the 72's to be honest.

76 also had the 2 oval gauges

Ok, so it seems the only thing I got right was the tail lights. :D

Wow! That’s some good info! I definitely couldn’t say that the tail lights haven’t been changed during its lifetime. Would the earlier tail lights fit right into the later spot?

I’ve pretty much been cleaning on it. It was pretty dirty and the paint was oxidized. I’ve gone over it with a cleaner wax. That helped a lot. Next I plan on rubbing it with a clay bar. After that, I’ll probably have a few spots I’ll need to hit with a buffer. I’ve buffed a lot of boats, but gelcoat is a lot more forgiving than paint so I want to keep it to a minimum. I’ll finish up with a coat of wax.

This weekend I’m gonna change out everything from the points to the plugs. I also just received a Series 5 shop manual that has some pretty good info in it.

In going over it, I’ve come up with a few questions as to what’s original or not:

File comment: Did a LUV ever have a passenger mirror? I was hoping to remove the broken one that was on there and just have a couple of little holes to deal with. There are 6 of them under there! One set of holes closely matches the holes on the driver’s side so I’m hoping there was an original mirror there.

File comment: I’m almost positive, but can you guys confirm that the moulding isn’t stock? It doesn’t look original, but it was very well done for a home gamer. Whoever applied it took a lot of care to get it right.

I almost forgot, I was talking to a guy about the truck today. He told me that his neighbor has 2 diesel LUV’s in his yard.

I at least have to go check them out!

My 76 had red turn signal lenses.

They're easy to swap though yeah.

And those diesel LUVs are gonna look waaay different than you LUV. lol
