I have tried to look up the answer for this with no luck. I couldn’t download the zip file to interchangeable parts on this site to look it up there.

So, if someone could please help and tell me if the gas tanks for all luvs 72 thru 80 are the same? All of the hook ups and sending unit the same?

Series 1&2 are the same part number on the tank. Series 3 didn't have a part number, Series 4 through Series 10 all have the same tank part number.

For the sending unit, Series 1 & 2 are the same, Series 3 has its own, Series 4, 5, & 6 are the same, Series 8 has its own, and Series 9 & 10 are the same.

And it looks like the fuel gauges match the sending units for compatibility year to year.

Thanks for the information. I have a 1978 LUV. Doesn’t sound good for me. I just bought a tank off of a 1972. The sending unit is supposed to be in good working order and looks clean. The inside of the tank looks really clean also. I’ll find out tomorrow when I drop my gas tank out.

Looking at the factory parts book series 4,5,6,8,9 & 10 use the same tank, part number 94026006. Looks like a 75-80 are the same

Thanks for the replies. I installed it this morning and put them side to side, physically they look the same. They also have the same hose connections, nothing different. I don’t know if they are somehow different on the inside.

The old one I took out, from what I could see inside the tank, had a metal line (main feed gas line) that has rot in different areas of the rod. The replacement tank’s rod/line was clean from rot or anything else.

The problem I was having with the old tank was, at about half a tank it would start to not be able to feed gas from the tank to the carb. I bought a new Mr Gasket electric fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator as I installed the rebuilt engine and were working properly.

I hope this was the problem and that this will fix it. After installing the tank I put gas in it and ran it. No problems for now. The sending unit works on and off showing about half a tank of gas which seems right.

Old tank, first picture below.

3638.....Tell me, did you have a lot of trouble with all the rubber gas lines getting re- attached? I've been wanting to repair my gas sending unit but am afraid I'll screw up the hoses. I have a vent system in the left front of the bed. Did that give you any trouble? Thanks.....

On my luv the some of the old hoses on the tank were stubborn to take off, but the new ones went on easy.

The hoses were a little work to take off but no problems. To re-attach them was an easy re-install. Removing the gas tank was easy to do.
