Hi guys, did the LUV engine get redesigned in 1978-80? Do the '78-'80 models have the starter on the drivers side?....or all the engines the same through '80? How about the clutch? Are they all hydraulic? Thanks Don.

I will look it up when I get home from work. I think everything changed 75-76 and remained the same until they changed a few things again in 81.

Both my 79 and 80 were/are cable clutch.

72-75 had intake and exhaust on same side. 76-82 had intake and exhaust on opposite sides. There are a lot of starter changes and cable / hydraulic differences that I don't know by heart. My 76 had a hydraulic clutch and my 80 4x4 had a cable clutch.

Afaik all the motor components from 76-82 interchange.

There is also the option of downloading the parts list from this site and doing research that way. That's where I was going to get my information for you from.

THanks .....My '77 has hydraulic clutch with slave cylinder on passenger side. Starter is also on passenger side. Flow through head with exhaust on drivers side. Several years ago I bought a supposed 1977 LUV transmission from B&R Auto Wrecking in Albany, Oregon. When I opened the crate I found the starter to be on the drivers side of the LUV> Couldn't use it. Now I'm not sure if it is a LUV transmission at all. This is the reason for my query.
