I got my Luv (finally) and I thought it would be easier to get the thing running while I planned my engine swap... We'll, the stock engine is bring a pain, so I started looking around for info for a swap. My experience is with Japanese cars, but the 350 seems an easier swap.
My buddy happens to have a 1990 350 SGI that he's ready to give me basically nothing (trade) ... I don't really understand what the SGI part means... fuel injected? Is it better to get a carbed engine? Should I use it? Take it and trade it? Ideas?
Most of my friends have experience with Nissan sr20s etc. Anyone know if that would be a good idea?
Sorry... Nubie questions

That will be a 1990 350 SG1 Meaning Small block Generation 1.

Being a 1990, would depend what it's out of. My 1990 Chevy pickup had throttle body fuel injection, basically halfway between a carb and EFI. It had a carb like throttle body on the intake manifold with 2 fuel injectors in the venturi in place of the carb's jets.

If you can get the (incredibly basic and easy to work on) computer with the engine, they are super simple to work on and MUCH more reliable than most carbs.

I'd go sr20det or even just a DE if you have buddys with parts. I know I have seen at least 1 sr20 swap on this forum, would weigh a lot less than a Chevy v8 and has great aftermarket and power potential.

The 350 is a simple swap since you can buy mounts headers etc... if it is tbi it'll be easier than a full efi swap. Either option will require wiring in the computer and all the associated parts, sensors, etc etc..

Then comes the driveline for the new trans, dealing with meshing your stock electrical system with the new engine, i would leave everything alone that isn't engine related I got way too deep in my wiring...
I highly recommend making a removable trans xmember makes install and removal so much easier.

Ok. That makes sense. The engine was sitting wrapped up on a barn on property my friend bought. He says it looks like it is all there (haven't seen it in person yet). I don't know what it was out of, I tried looking it up, but got a very vague response. casting number is 14093638-GM 5.7 SGI- d230. Any thoughts about its origin based on this? I'm basically trying to decide if I want to drive to his place (a couple hours away) to only realize it isn't the engine I'd want.
Thanks for all your info so far. You are already helping!

14093638 Small Block V8 1987-1995 350, 2 bolt or 4 bolt, roller or flat tappet cam, 1-piece rear seal

This is what I'm looking at. Basically, it seems like it could be anything... what can i expect for performance of any of these engines?

I would expect to rebuild it since you dont have any history on the engine. Put a ls in it. They are shorter, weigh less and there are millions of them laying around.

If it's been sitting a long time in WA it is probably going to need to be gone through. And it could have been sitting because it was blown when it was pulled and forgotten about.
I wouldn't put my eggs in that basket so to speak unless he is able to confirm it isn't seized up or damaged internally, if he's willing to try to turn it over with a breaker bar or pull the oil pan and see how it all looks. But really frige is right about the LS being better if you plan an efi swap anyway if you have he budget.

SR swap will be fairly simple since it is also a small inline 4 like the current engine
This is all custom but it shows how they fit
viewtopic.php?f=33&t=30097&hilit=Sr20
Search sr20 on this site a good few have done the research already

So, I'm picking up this engine for a bottle of wine (he's a friend and I'll give him a good bottle). The plan is to go through it and see what needs replacing. I'm also begi5to look for a transmission. The v8 beer budget links all say th350, but I've heard conversations about a 700r4 and a 200r4... But i really want a 5 speed... Any ideas about not too expensive? I'm not drag racing... It would be a daily driver with somewhere around 250 hp... Any thoughts?

NV3500 out of a full-size. They're abundant in the 4.3 1500s. Shifter hole lines up decently and it fits fine in the stock tunnel.

Don't expect to run long headers with this though. Shorties (if your mounts will accommodate - ACE mounts won't work with these) or rear dump manifolds. These transmissions also have hydraulic throwouts so be prepared to deal with that.

Also the NV3500 has a 1 piece case. They were also used in full-size Dodges but don't expect that to work.

NV3500 was in the 4.3L s trucks. S10, s15, Jimmy, blazer etc... I got mine from a pick pull with a warranty for a decent price.
First one had a broken shift fork common ish apparently which in my case meant 5th and reverse didn't exist. I was very happy I made that removable xmember when I found that out.
I have seen conflicting info saying the 1500 trucks and s trucks have a different overdrive ratio will have to find it when it's not 5am

That's correct. The s10s have a better OD gear but they're a lot more rare. At least in my search.

Great info! How much should I be looking to pay for a decent one? I don't have the skills to rebuild one yet... I would want to do highway driving, is there a code or a specific type?
Thank for all your great advice!

There's not a huge difference in the ratios really. If your rear end is geared high enough (3.73 or 3.42 or somewhere in that range) you'll probably be happy with either. Maybe a 200rpm difference at highway speed.

I don't know if there's any different numbers on the exterior or not.

This would have the rear end... Is this the nv3500 I would want?

So the sbc 350 is picked up and on the stand... Starting to plan the rebuild/ or at least serious inspection... Any tips you would give a guy that you wished you'd known before you got into it? ?

I also made and offer on the S10 with the 5 speed... Any other parts on there besides the rear end and nv3500 of should keep?

Just to be sure that S10 has the 4.3 not the 2.8 right? Can't see the pic well on my phone

I had to get a little crafty with my clutch master cylinder since the luv clutch was a cable pull system and S10 was a Hydraulic push system. I think early luvs were hydraulic?

Yeah my 76 was hydraulic, but my 80 was cable.

Also x2 on the s10. Be sure it's the 4.3 as it has the same bolt pattern as a sbc

Another question...
Can i use the rear end out of a 1500 1/2 ton? One popped up in the area for a good deal!
