It seams that an S10, 4;10 gears and positraction rearend is a rare item to find. Does anybody know if any GM 8 1/2" posi unit could be installed into an S10 rear. I can find posi units in 4x4 but the rear is too wide. I need a little help here. Bob

most s10's have 7.5 rear, The 8.5 camaro rear has a different spline axle. The blazers usually have a posi and 3:73's in 2wd, and 4:10's in most (but not all) 4x4 versions..

I believe that from 95 and up the S10 had an 8 1/2 rear end with 30 spline axels. Finding a posi in it is rare. Can I use an S10 4x4 posi unit in the 2wd S10 rear end? Bob

Yes, as long as the axle spline count matches, GM used two, 26 & 28. The 26 spline is sometimes called the 7.5" & the 28 the 7.625". Other than the spline count they are identical.

You have my attention again. I believe the 7,625 is 28 spline and the 8.5 is 30 spline. Correct me if I'm wrong. S10's from 83-92 even had available a 7.5 rear which also had 28 spline axels. I appreciate your input as to the posi unit being able to switch over from one axel to another as long as the axel spline is the same. I have a 4.10 axel. now all I need is another one with a posi unit and it can be from a 4x4 and even a blazer which is easier to find.

He re is a little info I picked up years ago. someone has probably already posted this in the past but I couldn't find it.
Codes are found on a sticker in the glove box.....
GU4 - 3.08 gears
GU5 - 3.23 "
GU6 - 3.42 "
GT4 - 3.73 "
GT5 - 4.10 "
HC4 - 4.56 "

G80 - Posi Unit

83-92 7.5 26 spline {in my text above I entered 28 spline which was incorrect}
88 > 7.625 28 spline
95 > 8,5 30 spline
98 > ZR2 has rear disc brakes

I believe you'll need a posi diff with a thrust block. I've been told that the ones with rear disc brakes don't have that, but it's needed for drum brake equipped rear ends.

Now it's getting confusing. What is a thrust block. Is it part of the posi unit or is it part of the axel housing itself. Are you saying the housings are different if it has a posi or not. Bob

Hey, I just noticed you're right up the road from me. :)

I've told you all I know. I have an Isuzu Impulse 3.90 LSD (the generic term for "Posi-Traction") rear end on my shelf that I bought from oldestisuzuist. He, or someone else, told me it would need to have a thrust block because my P'up has drum rear brakes, and the donor Impulse had disc brakes. I'll eventually get around to learning what that means, and get that rear end installed. But for now, I've told you everything I know about it. ;)

2 more cars and we could start a club. lol I really appreciate all the feedback. I have a 1980 all stock stepside Luv. I just bought a 700R4 and a 5.7 to go in it. I just sold my 26 model T and have to deliver it to Virginia on the 22nd this month. I restored it from the frame up. How I ever went from a model T to a Luv truck i'll never know.

The rule you're quoting is for Isuzu axles, we're talking GM 10-bolts here, they're C-clip axles.

That's good to know, thanks for clarifying. :)

As long as the 4.10 axle you have is a GM 7.625 w/28 splines you need something like the attached, swap your ring gear to the new posi carrier along with some new bearings shimmed to the same backlash as before. You have a vast choice of LSDs & lockers that will fit.

I decide to go with an s10 Blazer rear end 2wd. Same spring perch width as the Luv with disc brakes standard. Mine is 342 gears with no posi. I bought an Eaton posi unit from Ebay for 125 and installed it. Lash came out to my liking at 8 deg with no shimming. I went with the Eaton Posi because it is rebuildable unlike the common Auburn unit found in chevy rears. I stayed away from the Eaton Gov Loc due to its failure rate of the coil unit that locks it up. I'm an old school drag racer and street rod builder and these rear ends go back a long time. I know this rear will not take hard lunges but I plan on only doing rolling takeoffs with my 350 HP V6 hidden under the hood with my Nitrous switch also hidden in my console. He He
