Ok so as you may know my truck is a mutt. So clutch is howling and need to know what it is to buy new one. My truck has a 5spd swapped in it at some point. All I can tell you is 5th gear is kind of odd to put in gear you have to drop the shifter lower then the neutral slot and go right and up. Also what about flex plate am I going to need? Prefer to buy new not have it machined.

They should be available new. What engine do you have?

Yes there is new clutch kits, it's stock 1.8l. Problem is its a 5spd swaped transmission.

Shouldn't make a difference as long as the spline count is the same

Right. If that's the case, the clutch disk and pressure plate just need to match your flywheel.

Replace the pilot bearing, rear main seal, and release bearing while you're in there, too.

Thanks guys, only catch with that is only way to know is to tear it apart then order parts. Is there an id tag I can look for on transmission to know which one it is and how many splines?

Count the splines on the trans or disc. Also there are two diameters of discs, the splint was 79 or 80. After you get them out and figure out the splines and diameter they should be available from NAPA or most auto parts stores.

All tranny shafts are 24 spline/1" diameter. The only difference is the clutch diameter, either 8" or 8-1/2" for the MSG4/5, each has a different bolt pattern to attach to the flywheel, so the flywheel must match. Unless your truck has had the later 8-1/2" flywheel & clutch swapped in you have the standard 8" clutch & flywheel that came with the truck. The 8-1/2" clutch first appeared in 1980 4x4s, so it didn't get installed with the original Low 4x4 kit.
The only way to tell which clutch you have is to measure the diameter, so I would buy the 8" clutch kit locally, pull the tranny & measure, then if you do have the larger clutch return the 8" & swap. This is one of those instances when paying a bit more for local parts is an advantage.
An upgrade option would be to buy the larger clutch kit and a matching flywheel, the only problem is sourcing the flywheel. Every parts supplier I have seen lists the wrong flywheel, they list the 8-bolt flywheel for a 4ZDI/C1 2.3/2.0 turbo engine but the correct part is the 6-bolt flywheel for the '80-'82 G180Z 4x4 only version or any version of the '83-'87 G200Z. The 8-bolt flywheel will not fit your crank, no matter what the supplier claims. Best bet for the larger flywheel is a salvage yard, but JLEMOND had new ones at one time, I bought one for about $125.

GREAT advice, I was hoping you'd fill in the huge gaps I left with my answers. ;)

I don't think Jerry is a member here. I won't post his contact info here. Onebigburb, if you'll PM me, I'll give you his email address.

I have NOT seen any ID tags...YEP i understand that BAD CATCH but best bet on a "so called mutt" is to pull it 1st then you know whats in there & not doing the back n forth exchange w/ parts especially if they charge restocking fee.

Thank you for the indepth detail on that. Of coarse you brought me to another question. Is the 8.5" upgrade worth it? Does the 8.5" have other options as in stage 2 or 3 or 6 puck style?

Upgrades? Yes, up to a point. The 8.5 clutch is the same one used in 2.3-powered pickups from '86-'95 & '86-'87 turbo diesel-powered pickups & Troopers. Look up the clutch options available for these trucks. Centerforce is no longer available but some other brands of specialty-type clutches are, whether they are better than the standard style I can't say. Stock OEM clutch was Exedy/Daikin, the ones specifically for the t-diesels supposedly have the most clamping power of the OEM clutches. Most parts suppliers list the same Exedy part number for the gas & diesel engines, so who knows if this is the one with the stiffer springs?
Worth it? For me, yes. Although I haven't done it yet I have all the parts, when the time comes to replace the current clutch I will swap in the correct flywheel & matching 8.5" clutch. My current 8" clutch is very easy to slip, especially since it's old & has been hot numerous times before. More surface area in the 8.5" has to be better. The clutch kits are MOL the same price between the two sizes, so the added expense is the new 8.5" flywheel, the added labor is the 6 bolts to R&R the flywheel. If the 8" clutch didn't need replacing anyway then the upgrade is harder to justify.

I believe the &.5" flywheel was also standard equipment on 4x4 P'ups/LUVs beginning around 1980. I certainly could be wrong about this though.

I'll have to weigh out my options here. It will be a few before I bother with clutch least of my worries right now just wanted to gather parts. However now I must go to the thinking cave. ROFl

Yep thats right. My 80 4x4 had one, my earlier parts motor didnt.

As far as the clutch making a difference
8" diameter is 50.26 sqin surface area (minus huge void in middle which is the same on both)
8.5 is 56.74. So you are gaining 6.48 more sq in of surface which is all added friction surface... Even if all of the void surface in the middle of the disc was friction surface that is almost 13% more. Subtract all that void center space and that is a pretty hefty addition of friction surface
