I'm doing a SOA on the rear Differential and I wondered if anybody took the ring & pinion setup and flipped it upside down to raise the pinion closer to the proper driveline angle. I looked at it pretty close over the weekend and physically it looks doable, but I wondered if it would create any other problems such as lubrication to the pinion bearing. Can anybody shed some light on the subject?

it might make you go backwards :)
plus, it would probably cause oil starvation to the bearings inside(bad)

i don't think the pinion angle will be too bad when you go SOA. a good idea would be to point the pinion at the output on the transmission or transfer case, then weld your perches on top...that will give you the correct angle

What he said /\. The tranny can be dropped a little to make up for some of the pinion angle difference. I did this with my old blazer. I just put spacers between the crossmember and the frame, and used longer bolts.

Yeah, I was thinking about the rotaion last night and realized that I would have 4 speeds in reverse. I guess I'm better off tilting the rear a little.

if it stil off a little after yu weld you pads on top of your axles, you can also add shims to make it closer to the right angle. they are just little wedge like things that you put between your pads and your springs.

just remember if you turn it upside down the fill hole for the diff is on the bottom and you can't fill it with gear oil

I was talking about the the guts of the rear, not the whole axel housing. If it was just a case of a fill hole, a drill, thread tap & bolt would cure that problem.
