So my 80 Luv has the stock distributor. If I want to upgrade to an electronic distributor, what options do I have? I know the 81/82 Luv will work. How about an mid 80's Trooper, or Pup? Do they connect without any mods?

try them for distributors and electronic conversions. Good info if you can find it. Check your distributor number and check their site and places like summit racing.

pertronix is generally the way to go for cost
I used a 85 trooper/pup w/1.9L distributor, electronic does away with the points. I got it on sale from rockauto for slightly less than the pertronix so I went that way. it goes in place of the stock one like it belongs there.
either one works just fine depends on what you can find cheaper. try ebay for the distributor and see if you can snag one for cheap used, not much to wear out inside.

Just browsing a few sites on different distributors, Petronix does seem the cheepest. As far as installing that kit, is it pretty straight forward?

I turns out my Vaccum advance needs to be replace,d so it's actually worth for me to get the distributor.
I see that Rock Auto has both the 81 Luv and 85 Trooper. The Luv is $36 less. Any difference between the two?

The 81 LUV dizzy will have a remote ignitor/control box.whereas the 85 Trooper is all in one.
The trooper dizzy is drop-in and a simple 2 wire hookup.

At least that is what I've found in my experience.

So I was looking at the packing slip (this is from Rock Auto supply) for my new Distributor. The packing slip has in the description: 83-87 Trooper. I haven't put it in yet, but i'm hoping it won't the wrong model. I suppose when I go to drop it in, I'd find out right?

that sounds right to me, I think late 86 or 87 they changed engines and started running things differently, as long as it doesn't have points it should be what you need  make sure you mark the position before you pull the old one

I got my distributor in. I had my mechanic help me splice into the plug wires of the dizzy. My mechanic has some more professional grade connectors, and I''ve had him do some wiring in the past.

For those who want to do your own upgrade. The black wire with stripe goes to the + side of the coil. The solid black wire goes to the - side of the coil.

With no more points, my truck starts better, and runs smoother. :D

Question about the different electronic distributors, how do you physically tell which elec distr is the one that needs an "ignitor / control module" and which one doesn't? Any pictures of differences? I don't know anything about them. I have one but I know which one it is, I've had it for a very long time.

Also, for those who have the luv version with the control module/ ignitor, where do you find the module/ ignitor. I've search and can't find one.

Thank you

If you keep the stock Luv distrubtor, I think there's a couple posts on here. Serach for "pertronix ignitor"

Bringing back from dead. So if I understand correctly the 85 trooper is basically an hei setup? So basically u need distributor cap and rotor thats all right? I know search well every single post people stop asking before there is full explaination except write up for later luv setup. However if trooper is hei style with built in coil it would be a much cleaner setup.

The newer Isuzu electronic distributors do not have a built in coil like the GMs do.
They still have the coil on the inner fender.
They have a built in ignitor rather than a remote one on the coil.
First pic is of an early distributor with remote ignitor.
Second pic is of a later one with built in ignitor.

I've kept the stock 1.8 coil on all that I've done.
