I'm building a 1976 with a G180 and I would love some pointers from guys with experience. I'm having delta grind me a street performer cam(272) with .440 lift. Do I need to do anything else to the head? I'm having a machine shop due the rebuild and also going to shave the head .020 as I heard that is a good safe number. Also, plan to purchase a pace setter header. Any input on if this is all good or bad would be helpful along with other things like clutch ideas and ignition stuff would be greatly appreciated.
I never did anything other than strip down my G180z and find out that the head was rotten, and beyond spending any time or money on. I ended up going for a 4ZD1 (2.3 litre) instead and sent it off to a wizard engine builder. I was happy to get my hands dirty, but he did the full tear down, chemical dip, crack test, machine & deck the block, port, polish and flow match the head. He also did the crank and custom cam grind, sourced 90% of the internal goodies and then full assembly. Pretty much a blueprint build.
I still haven't turned it over other than by hand every month or so. The same guy also ported the induction manifold and built a set of tuned pipes,,, so yes, I'm itching to have it run
