Trying to pull my motor for a rebuild. How are you guys getting the bell housing bolts off the top of the bell house ing behind the motor??

Surely I don't have to pull the whole transmission? I can't even get a wrench on those bolts!

Anyone pull the motor without removing tranny also?

Please tell us:
1. what you're driving...
2. what engine...
3. what transmission (including 2wd, 4wd, etc).

If the truck happens to be a 2nd gen, I can tell you that the bolts/nuts are indeed accessible from underneath, but it helps to have the truck on jack stands. I'll go into more detail once we find out the missing info--if it's something I can help with.

Jack

Since nobody with a 1st-gen LUV has weighed in yet, I'll tell you what I found with my 2nd gen (diesel) and hopefully it applies. Your housing should be the same as mine, except that they have the starters on opposite sides.

Of course, the truck should be on sturdy jack stands. Ramps will work, but I think they're far less convenient.

There were a couple of bolts that were hard to reach from underneath, with enough space to get leverage to turn them. I used a long socket extension that put the handle back near the tail of the transmission. I may have used a swivel joint, but I don't recall for certain. Since the tail shaft is smaller, it gives you more room to work than trying to turn a ratchet handle up close to the engine.

The engine and transmission can be pulled out together, and I've done it that way. It's way overkill, in my opinion. I'd definitely do it that way at the salvage yard, but they give you an A-frame hoist that's about 12 feet tall, and you don't have to worry about the tilt of the engine/transmission when it's just going straight up.

I use a 3 foot extension, wobble socket and go from the bottom.

Do you plan on putting it back in together? If so, I have one tip for you. Be sure to remove the entire transmission mount from the rear case. It makes all the difference in the world when trying to get the angle right to slide it under the tunnel.

Thanks for the tip Jack! I plan on putting back together. Just seamed easier for me to remove both together than fight with those top bell housing bolts.

Now for the rebuild.
