I have a 1979 luv that the exterior resistor on the coil smokes when key is turned on.

In normal operation the resistor is too hot to touch. With the engine stopped and the key on it gets even hotter if the points are closed. May have some dirt or junk on it making it smoke.

would that explain no smoke after starting
