Sounds kinda pricey for an engine and transmission--but if it's the whole truck, you can probably get about $300 back at the scrapyard for what you don't use. If that works out to $600, and assuming no major issues with the engine, I'd call that a pretty fair deal.

Thanks for your help. I think I'll go for it. I got the whole truck and it seems to run as it should,so I'm planning to run the truck for a few month the way it is, while i pull the engine out of my luv and hopefully do some body work and a paint job. It will be a learning experience for a newbie. :?

So what happened did the motor and tranny fit? I have the same luv and need to know which motor and tranny would be best for mine. I like diesels and want a turbo but really just need something that will go. Which swap is the best?

Here is what I found but I really just want something that will bolt into my 1979 4x4 Chevy Luv.

The 1992 that shows a diesel--there's no telling what that engine is, because it's not original. Isuzu stopped selling diesel pickups in 1987.

Several members here have done diesel swaps using the C223 from the 2nd-gen LUV / Isuzu P'up, and others have used the 4FB1 from the Isuzu I-Mark or Chevy Chevette. Those are really the only "bolt in" options, with the 4FB1 probably being the easiest.

What year for the I-Mark motors, and what size motor? Is there a big difference between the trooper and the trooper ll? I was told that a 86 trooper motor would work.

The I-Mark was available with a 1.8L SOHC diesel from 1981 through...maybe 1985 (or whatever year they changed body styles). The Chevette used the same engine. The nice things about that engine:
  • I has a 5,000 RPM redline. With the OHC, it pulls well all the way up to the redline, which works nicely for gas conversions. In contrast, the C223 2.2L has a 4,250-ish redline but it isn't eager to go there.
  • It's just a little smaller and lighter than the C223.
  • Best of all, the gas transmissions bolt right up.

As for the Trooper, I think they came to the U.S. as "Trooper II" and dropped the "II" sometime later. I think the "Trooper" was used for the 2nd generation (beginning in 1990) and thus never had a diesel. The '86 Trooper turbodiesel should work, but they're all 4wd. I'm not sure about the 2.3 or 2.6, because I'm not even sure which gas engines were offered in '86. I think oldestisuzuist could answer that one in his sleep. ;)

The only reason you'd lose 4wd is by changing out the transmission. This motor should bolt up to your transmission, but I think you'd have oil pan clearance problems. Is your 4x4 a factory setup?

Its factory, I was thinking a 2 1/2" body lift.

The list should contain all diesel motors that will bolt in with my stock (gas) transmission:

Isuzu IMark 1981 - 1985 (1.8L, 4 cyl), diesel (VIN P 8th digit)
Stock Isuzu Pup 1981 -1985 Engine 1.8L or 2.2L
Chevy Chevette 1985 (1.8L, diesel, VIN D)

If there are more years that I can add or more motors please let me know. I will be looking locally for something I can drop in.

The stock Isuzu PuP diesels from 81-85 will not bolt directly to the stock 4 speed trans. Different bell housing bolt pattern. I have heard that is is possible to swap the front of the transmission case to one from a diesel truck, but you'd need both transmissions, and I'm not sure that would work to a 4x4 LUV trans.

Good reminder, but I think his last question was regarding the I-Mark, which has the same bolt pattern as the gas engines. Yes, if he used the P'up or Trooper 4x4 diesel, the best solution would be to use 4x4 transmission from the diesel.

So I need the transmission housing from the stock 1981-85 diesel pups.

The following engines should bolt into my Gas 1979 4x4 Chevy Luv: (with possible oil pan clearance issues)

Isuzu IMark 1981 - 1985 (1.8L, 4 cyl), diesel (VIN P 8th digit)
Chevy Chevette 1985? (1.8L, diesel, VIN D)

What are the years available for the Chevette? I think they are the same as the IMark.

Also I have seen some threads about making sure you pull the diesel Fuel regulator, pump?

Unfortuntely, it's a little more complicated. Since you have a 4-speed transmission, the diesel bell housing just might not bolt up to your transmission. It bolts up to a gas 5-speed, but SOME of the 4-speeds are different. The only way to know is to look at the input bearing cover plate. If it has six bolts holding it on, the 5-speed diesel housing WILL bolt up. If it has only four bolts, the 5-speed diesel bell housing will NOT bolt up.

Yes.

I don't have a clue on that one, sorry.

No such thing. The only pump on the diesel is the injection pump, and it's bolted onto the motor. You'd have to remove the timing belt cover and timing belt just to pull it off.
