Has anyone bought one of these? Experiences? Advice? I've notice since I originally wanted to buy one it's gone up $10 in price. I should get the Nippondenso distributor for my '77 correct? Thanks fellers.

Not for a LUV, but I have upgraded several GM distributors over the years. I saw an ad recently where they have one that has a rev limiter built in. But sorta looks like a pain to take the cap off to adjust it...

Recommended. It installs very easily, and there's no more adjusting points, ever! I haven't touched my distributor since.

Ordered my Pertronix today, hopefully I got the right one... For my '77, probably all good. Anyway, No more points here I come! I'll probably keep an extra set around just in case, for the anticipation of the Impending EMP :) swap it out and drive around all Mad Max n stuff.

Go to Youtube and look up Pertronix. I did the other night, and one of the first things in there was how to set them up. But Basically, You take out the points and condes. Bolt the Pertronix back in its place (run your wires first from the inside to the outside). Use the plastic gap gauge set it....tighten bolts. connect Neg. and Pos. on your coil. start it up and drive away. Eveything I have read on them is stating they're Plug an Play. There isn't any need to mess with your timing (unless you have messed with it already and is running like crap). Let us know how its working for you. I'm buying one tomorrow. :)

While it may run without re-timing, I wouldn't go as far as saying there isn't any need to mess with it. I certainly found room for improvement after I switched over. I believe there is a slight registration difference between the standard points and the Pertronix kit, necessitating at least a SLIGHT twist. It's worth the extra 2 or 3mpg, I think.

This was just my experience. Anybody else care to chime in?

Just got my Pertronix kit in the mail. Ordered the 1643 kit from Retro Rockets. The ring has a part number 1641. Has anyone ordered the 1643 kit. The tag on the box is for an Ignitor Toyota 4 cyl. smaller Cam S. Am.

just orderd the same. How was your install? Impressions?
I assume Toyota used the same nippondenso dizzy. The Pertronix catalog specifies 1643 for the 78-80 LUV

I haven't had a chance to work on my truck. I want to make sure that the magnetic sleeve is the right one. I sent an e-mail to Pertronix and waiting for a response. Eyesore what part number was on your magnetic sleeve.

Got my pertronix on Monday. Mine also has the 1641 ring. Have you heard back from them yet?
Is this correct for our LUVs? can anyone else chime in? Have you used this ring, or do I need to buy yet another part?

OK, finally had warm weather and was able to get to the LUV today.

Good news! The 1641 ring works fine. Installation was quick and easy.
I did need to re-time it though. It would barely even start and run enough to get the timing light on it, but once we did, it was a simple matter of dialing it in. Running sweet!

Well, the gap (spark plugs) were set at .044
But I think you're asking what the timing is set at. Not sure where we started at, but ended at 12 degrees advanced.
Hope that helps. Other than the timing it was a very simple job. Good luck!
