Picked up some vintage parts today from a buddy. Unused MacKay aluminum water pump and an old Edelbrock performer that needs cleaning.

I installed the tach I got from Jonathonlo today. The wiring diagram helped, I am not good with wiring at all. I want it there for the new motor break-in, I just need a few more parts and I'll get started on the swap.

I'm getting ready to move the 9 inch from my 76 to the 72. I have a 3.0 gear to swap in for freeway cruising. I figured if I did the motor first I'd never get around to swapping the rear end. A working e brake will be nice too.

I picked these up the other day too. They were on a 74 Courier then shelved for 20 years.

lol, Its mostly a nostalgia thing, if I go with a camper shell down the road. I had a set on my 74 Mazda back in the day. They go good with CB antennas and side pipes.

Ben must have put a lot of time into fabricating the base for the e-brake handle. It is nice, simple and compact. It fits pretty close to the hump and right up to the seat. Luckily the floor is pretty flat there once I get the rubber mat out of the way.

I got lucky today and found 31 spline axles in Bens old truck. I wasn't sure my 3.0 gear was going to work. I always thought the truck had a versaille rearend but I found an old post of Ben's saying it was from a town car. Both of those are 28 splines from what I have read. I can't wait to get it in the 72.

Nice Summers Brothers axels

I had planned on pulling the rear all apart and painting everything separate but ran into difficulties with the u-bolts/traction bars. My deep socket wouldn't clear the traction bar and I don't have a wrench that big. Lazy did play into it I must say. My satin black seems a little glossy, it was running out. Its time to pull the bed off the 72

I snapped the 28-spline axles so I upgraded to the 31.

The e-brake is work-made using a handle out of Jetta we found flipped over in the mountains. :)

I saw the VW logo on the handle, nice history.

I got the bed off fairly easy. Only one bolt was double nutted and rusted solid but it was no match to my breaker bar and twisted in half. I washed the rear with simple green and need to go over the frame with a cup wheel tomorrow before I paint. I am thinking the stepside bed needs to go on while I have it apart.

I am worried the exhaust might be too close to the 9 inch housing but I will find out tomorrow.

A couple issues popped up today so I am slowing down the swap. First issue is the leaf spring bushings. The 72 uses larger bolts and a sleeved bushing. The 76 has the later style Luv rubber bushings with no sleeve. The larger 72 bolts have 1/16th" of play in the rubber bushings from the 76. Ideally I can find a sleeved bushing that fits the 76 springs. I thought I would start at the local 4x4 shop and see what they have.

Second discovery was the driveshaft u-joint does not fit the new carrier yoke. The driveshaft was set up for the beefy drag yoke that was in the 4.56 carrier. I am hoping I can buy the correct u joint and just swap the cap over to fit the yoke.

Nothing too bad so far

The driveshafts are about 1" different but I won't know if its a go until I get the 9 inch in place and I see where it lines up.

The bushing problem was easy to solve. I have a buddy that works at a metal supply store and he knew exactly what I needed. I even got the employee discount. 8)

I hit it hard today and made some good progress. I cup wheeled the frame and painted it all up. I got the bushings all fitted and put it together. I think I will put on my other exhaust since this one hits the leaf spring. Louder is always better. The old tires are 265 50 15 and the clearance is minimal with the frame rail. That is with a 1/4" shim behind the wheels. I Think my 245 60's will be better. I can't wait to drive it again.

Its a great time of year for craigslist. I picked up a new harmonic balancer and a set of block huggers for next to nothing yesterday. My times being eaten up working on my companies Isuzu NPR I have to prep for sale, so not much progress this weekend.

$10 never installed

I got the 72 rearend in the 76 today. I picked up some bolts to fit the 72 bushings and modified the hangers to fit the bolt. Still have to swap the tires over to the centerlines. They are noticeably lighter than the weld knock offs. The 72 is already lower than it was with 3" blocks and the bed is off.

I dug out the exhaust for the block huggers and they dump right at the back of the cab if I measured right.

Looking good. Looks like the 76 will not be just a parts truck but a runner one day.
