just traded for a new old 80 luv and i need to get the brake/tail lights and i'm assuming reverse lights going. it's so rigged up, i can't even tell what's going on. 2 questions: what gauge wire (guys at the parts store didn't know) and what's the easiest way to approach this? should i just splice in as far forward under the cab as i can?

buy a Haynes manual. It will have the wiring diagram for it.Also if the connectors are intact..I would rewire from the connectors under the bed to the tail lights.

Also solder and heat shrink all the butt splices less likely to cause issues later.

If the wiring is good to the square plug near the license plate / spare tire you could just replace the rear harness.

Go here: http://www.luvtruck.com/Information.htm
Under "Factory drawings and part listings", download: "Series 9/10 (1979/80) Factory Wiring Diagram (ZIP)"

The haynes manual would still be helpful, but the diagram is available on here.

thanks for the responses. the wiring was all rigged up, so i spliced in at the connectors and ran new wire all the way back.

so, the wiring diagrams aren't necessarily helping me in some spots.

bear with me as this is my first time doing anything like this. this is kinda my first project.
so, i bought new trailer lights — that's what was on it, but they were all corroded. typical setup w/ one wire for brake light/turn signal, one wire for taillights and a ground. how i have it right now is wrong b/c it can't tell what's brake light and what's turn signal. when i hit my brakes, the turn signal indicators on the dash both light up, as if i had both blinkers at the same time, exactly in time w/ when i hit the brakes.

everything works, just not exactly right. if i just have my taillights on or just hit my brakes, it's fine (except for lighting up my turn indicators w/ my brakes). and when i hit my brakes, it cancels those out.

i ran the turn signal and stop light down the truck to the back, then butt spliced those with the (r) brake light/turn signal and another brake light that bridges across the back bumper to the (l) taillight, where it splices in in the same manner as the right.

it's clear the problem is that it can't tell which is brake and which is turn, i just don't know how to correct that.

You need a converter for that.

The trailer lights you bought are 4 wires, ground, tailights, right and left blinkers. The brake lights work through the left and right turn wires, like on older cars and trucks.
The LUV has a 5 wire system in which the brakes and turn signals have their own wires.
Here is a pic of the converter you need.

Thanks Ripper for the detailed info and picture. I was on my phone when I posted, which is why my reply was so short...

You should be able to pick one up at most any auto parts store, usually found in the truck accessories,or any RV parts dealership.
