I'm working on an 80 Long Bed. When I turn the key to "RUN" without starting none of the warning lights come on.
Once started the Gen light comes on. I've done the fuse box fix and subbed in alternators and regulators and nothing turned out that Gen light when its running. Any thoughts? Could the two issues be related?
I seem to recall that the warning lights come on at the 1st stop as a check so that you can verify that the bulbs work, but it also makes sense that with all circuits energized without the motor running you will have no charging and no oil pressure, so the bulbs are lit.
Can't see how that charging light can be out without the motor running and then on when it is running.

I would say blown fuse or open connection at #4 fuse block terminal.

I agree. The light works by having one terminal hot from the gage fuse, and the other one hot from the VR. No power to instrument panel with the key on and engine off, no light. Start the engine and power flows from the VR through bulb and grounds through everything else. Both hot, no light.

When mine did this the alternator tested bad. Replaced it and it's good now.

Egg and Labman: You guys are good. Cleaned and futzed with #4 fuse and all is good.
The Chevy GM manual has an illustration that shows that each fuse services more circuits than what is listed on the fuse box cover. It lists #4 as Back up lamp, heater, and turn: and #1 as Tail lamps and instrument cluster.
Seeing that now I would have guessed #1. Why did 4 do it?

#4 powers everything that operates with the key on only: heater fan, radio, back up lights, instrument warning lights, gauges. #1 powers everything even with the key off: headlights, tail/marker lights, instrument illumination lights, dome light. The INFORMATION section wire diagrams on this site also show this very well although a bit small to read. Enlarging it a couple times helps to read it better.

I'm not finding the information about the fuse box that you mention. I'd like to print up a big clear copy. Egg: can you be more specific about where that is?? Thanks much.

On the Luvtruck log-in page: Top left, where it says Message Forum, Owners, Information, cool stuff, etc. Click information, scroll to Fact Drowings, Part listings then pick the year and click. It is a PDF file with schematics so just trace all the lines (wires )to the components. Plus sign at the top expands the drawings.
You may find this a bit difficult of course as I made a living at this for many years.
