Found a 2wd 1990 amigo. Has a five speed. I don't remember the size of the motor but it might be the 2.3 or 2.6? I don't know for sure. But will go back and check. But can the 5speed and rear end work in the luv with the stock 1.8.

The '90 Amigo rear end can't be much different from the '90 Pickup. The '90 Pickup is about 6" wider than the '81-'87 P'up, so the rear axle from a '90 won't work for a P'up. I'd assume it won't work for a 1st-gen LUV either.

The 2.3 transmission is an MSG-5, and it should work with your 1.8. It has a larger output shaft, so you'd need the newer-style slip yoke. I'm not sure if the Amigo yoke will fit your driveshaft. You would not need the remote shifter that comes on the Amigo.

If it's a 2.6, it's a different transmission (a MUA-5). It has a hydraulic-operated clutch and a large output shaft--and probably a larger input shaft, but I'm not certain on that one.

Ok then looks like I'm going to have fun next week taking apart an amigo and a luv to do some figuring.
Thanks a lot.

Then let me ask since you brought up the pup. There was a 86 pup, but it was a 4speed, when I read the 5speed post I got confused some were on what is what, could this 86 have the 3.73 or the 3.43? If those are the right ratios. Cuz it to my understanding that the 86 rear end will fit under the luv.

The 4-speed (if 2wd) should be 3.42, according to my "sources".

in 86....and no other year....85 is very different...87 is a little different....

a 1.9L 2wd is 4sp with 3.42 only, no 1.9L in 4wds at all
the 2.3L in a 2wd is 5sp 3.73 only
a common 2WD diesel is 5sp with 3.73
or 3.42 with 4sp in the MPG+ model. exsep CA there a 5sp with the 3.42 in a MPG+ model
there very over geared with the stock tires, even on small hills.

4WDs are 4.11s with 5sp in all but the troops, there all 4.55s and 5sp in 86....
oh yea one more,,,,,,a 2WD auto trans gas or diesel will have a 4.11  = one horrendous combo 8O

ive yet to find a 2WD 2.3L Amigo in a yard, but there sposed to be 4.11s

So over all, when deciding between the 3.42 and the 3.73, you can't go wrong with ether one. The 3.42 are good and better then what's stock on my truck. But the 3.73's are more ideal and better all the way around. And ether one is fine behind the 4speed if I can't fine a 5speed, is that right. And thanks to every one for there help and replying. I know this is a topic done over many times, but thanks a lot.

I'd avoid the 3.42 with your 1.8. It worked fine with the diesel, which had lower gearing in 1st-3rd gears and a lower-RPM power band. Your 1.8 is probably lacking in low-end torque, compared to the diesel. The 3.73 should be good, and the 4.10 is even good if you upgrade to a 5-speed.

If the Amigo has the 10-bolt Isuzu rear and does not have RAB the 3rd member will fit into the LUV axle housing, if it does have RAB then it won't.

If 2wd, 5-speed, it's 3.73. If 2wd 4-speed, 3.42. If 4wd or automatic, it's 4.10.

Ok the amigo I was looking at has the 2.6, so no one knows for sure if that Trans will work on the luv?
Joeisuzu you said that the 2.6 has the mua-5, the trans is hydra op clutch, and it does look like the luvs msg-5 trans,
If the input shaft is larger, can I use the clutch and fly wheel off the engine on the 1.8. Or is it the pilot bearing that is the issue.

Ok now for the rear end on the amigo, it is a 10 bolt and no (if I understood correctly) the RAB is a anti lock brake), it does not have that, but the 3rd member look a little differnt. And the housing looks bigger does this matter or not.

An MUA trans will bolt up to a 1.8 engine, use the pilot bearing, clutch & flywheel to match the engine, TOB for the tranny. Either use the Amigo parts to convert your truck to hydraulic clutch or contact JLEMOND for details in coverting the MUA to cable clutch. Fitting the MUA tranny into the LUV tunnel may be a problem.
As far as I know the only 10-bolt rear to come with a 2.6 was the GM 10-bolt in US-built Rodeos. Japan-built Amigos should have the Isuzu 12-bolt. Quick way to tell- if it has disc brakes it's a 12-bolt. A 12-bolt 3rd member won't interchange with a 10-bolt, the whole axle housing is 4" wider than a LUV.
Why are you looking for a different tranny & rear? Are yours bad or are you looking for different gearing?

Thanks for the info, as for why the reason why for differnt gears is cus I want something better then what's stock on the truck and better on the fuel, that's why I'm going from the 4speed and the stock rearend, to the 5speed and 3.73's, plus was just going off what I read also on the 5speed post. Why I'm I missing something, cuz if I am please let me know, when it come to gearing on diffs I'm lost.

Well some disappointment. The amigo rear different had the 12 bolt 3rd member. But I have another thought. If the different is that much wider and wont fit under the luv, how is it that other luvs have an s10 different and the wheels still tuck under the bed. Is the amigo different still that much wider.
