just a couple pics to show the difference between the impulse turbo manifolds and the stock manifolds

stock setup

Impulse turbo setup

this is as "bolt on" as any turbo swap you will ever find.
impulse turbo is a borg-warner IHI RHB5 (i believe the same as the ford thunderbird but dont quote me on that)

the manifolds have the same bolt pattern etc you can pull your old ones off and throw these ones on with very little effort

me too

i will be setting this all up on my spare engine after i finish going thru it and getting the head redone, cylinders honed, new bearings etc....
i wont be pushing extreme boost for quite a while... will keep it at the stock setting for a while and raise it once i trust the system can handle it...
may be converting to propane... cheaper to run than high octane (91+) gas, and with an average of 104-105 octane it should be more forgiving but still deciding on a setup... may stick with gas. next stage is fuel system so i will be deciding while i save up..

wont even be running this setup until i have got everything setup on my second engine for it, not worth destroying my daily driver cuz i wanted to boost it before its able to handle it.

You will lose 10% of your fuel mileage with propane, If you even care .

Propane + high compression head + Turbo =

If you haven't looked at propane components I would give Cary a call at gotpropane, Hes the propane + turbo king.

i gotta get my head decked anyway be because of a few gouges so it will bump compression up a bit
im looking into a few setups.. will likely end up running an impco 225 or 300 mixer in a blow thru setup, smallish front mount, etc
when the time comes to buy the setup i will be giving gotpropane a call and see what they have that will work for me. their website gave me a lot of the info that pushed me to the setup

and eh.... 10% less fuel economy for a fuel that doesnt leave carbon deposits in the engine and blacken the oil, costs 3.24 a gal (vs 3.60 in winter and around $4 in summer for 87 octane) AND is 105 octane.... i will give that 10% gladly for the reassurance my motor wont go PING... BOOM

ahh if only i had an unlimited budget

On the egine rebuild I would have it balanced and have the deck shaved you'll be boosting that thing so you want it to stay together.

yep the tighter i can keep the tolerances the better
im not in a huge hurry to throw it together still need to save up $$$ for the machine work and the propane conversion parts.
im hoping that bumping the compression up a bit will give me some more umph down low while im off boost then have it really come into its own once the turbo spools.

im thinking around 180hp would be a great point to aim for until i can get forged pistons and all the internal goodies, would be a huge improvement over stock to say the least

well popped my hood with it running and noticed oil being pushed out of the dipstick, god pissed and spent a few mins trying to find the source of the back pressure... PCV was blocked off... opened it up to vent straight out under the hood and no smoking since and i have been abusing the life out of it to see if it will do it again and none yet!
im waiting for my license suspension before i really tear into it. my turbo manifold has a crack  so i waiting for my uncle to take a look at it and see if he can save it..
still doing my research and planning the layout while i have the time.

well decided i dont want to spend over $2000 to set up a reliable turbocharged 1.8... im just gonna grab a 4.3 to throw in... add a couple pounds but get the same power a turbo g180 would give me for 1/3 the price with way more torque down low :ebiggrin

off to pick-n-pull tomorrow to see if i can find myself a v6 birthday present :)
looking for the older 85-86 carbed model to make it a lil quicker of a swap... if i cant find one i will get a tbi engine, sell the tbi system and swap it to the carb intake before i drop it in

i have less than 3 months to get it done so i think this will be much more practical.

for the time being it will have to be 2wd since the t case on the 4.3 is a driver side diff and the luv is passenger side...
i would really like to find a set of jeep cherokee axles to throw under it one of these days when i have some more money to throw at it. would be my best solution to getting back to 4x4, and would also get me a solid front axle and a much better selection of gear ratios and lifts etc

as of right now tho all im worrying about is getting the 4.3 swap under way. few more days till i go cheak the engine out. going to have to get the carbed intake and distributor from an 85-86 astro or truck to convert the one im getting and save myself a few weeks of chasing down bad sensors and finding an ecu and wiring harness.

as soon as i have some progress to show i will post it up and get some pics of the new engine and trans etc..

gonna be another week or so to hunt down the carbureted intake and quadrajet for it.. not gonna deal with the tbi just dropping in a carb

brought my new 4.3/700r4 home today :D
transfer case drops on the driver side so looks like im going to need to swap to a different front axle.. straight jeep maybe? :egeek

the engine looks like its in real good shape. i will get a few pics tonight when i get it a bit cleaned up and get some light on it.
next step... yank off all the emissions crap, a/c compressor, power steering pump (saving that), Tbi/intake and distributor and get it ready for the 4 bbl q jet and hei :ebiggrin old truck needs old style parts on it none of the electronic crap

also the 700r4 i got has a K on the case.. i read that this is the more "refined" and a bit stronger than the older one.. can anyone verify that?

You can get an adaptor for get a newer syle transfer case or just get an 90s case and keep your 4x4? Im not sure but I know you can find the info online, so you can keep your stock 4x4 for right now and when your ready to do your straight axle bluild you just throw toy axles in! haha :D Im pretty sure there passager side diff. Just an Idea anyway haha. Rather than getting a 2wd output shaved and doin that.(unless you were just gona run the transfer case) Your gona have to get drive lines made. just food for thought!  PICS!!!
