I know there is a sticky on this. But I wanna know excatly what vehicle I need to pull a tranny out of to do the swap. I got a 76 luv 2wd that a 4 speed. Hydralic clutch. I know there is a certain year isuzu that has a hydralic clutch 5 speed that's a direct fit. I do not want to have to modify stuff to do this. Any help will be apprecated. Thanks

There were no "Federal" spec isuzu trucks that had a compatible 5-speed with a hydraulic clutch--that I'm aware of. There's a fairly easy mod that will allow you to add a slave cylinder to the cable-operated bell housing of any Isuzu Pickup 2.3 transmission, and they reportedly work well. Or, you can convert to cable (not what you wanted), or you can find an Isuzu Impulse transmission from an '84-'89 (I believe) Impulse (very rare). OR, you can find any 2.3 Isuzu Pickup 5-speed and add an Impulse hydraulic bell housing (I have one of these bell housings for sale, cheap).

Regardless which option you choose, it's not a straight transmission swap unless you luck up and find a whole Impulse transmission.

So I need to find a 84-89 isuzu impulse. To do it Correct? I'll prolly just buy a a whole impulse and pull the tranny. Then part it out and scrap it to make my money back.

They're hard to find. The same transmission is in a 2.3 Isuzu Pickup, and around here they go for $50 at Pull-A-Part...but with a cable bell housing. But adding a slave cylinder is really not hard.

I've reduced my bell housing to $40 + shipping.

1986-1987, and in Pickups from 1988-1995.

One additional consideration: If you get one from a turbo Impulse, it will have a .76 5th gear, instead of the usual .86 ratio. That's great for the highway, if your motor will turn it. It may depend on the rear end you have. If you have a 4.10, it seems ideal. But did I say these are rare?

I have been looking into, but do not know if it will work, putting a 5-speed from a '92 S10 into my '80 LUV. My LUV clutch has a diameter of 7 7/8" by 24 teeth by 1" shaft, My S10 5-speed has a diameter of 9 1/8" by 14 teeth by 1" shaft. A clutch assembly from a 90-91 Impulse has a diameter of 7 7/8' by 14 teeth by 1" shaft. I have not taken any bell housing measurements or tranny length. Will the bell housings fit for the swap and how will the length be?

OK, well thanks for the info, I guess the 5-speed swap for me will have to wait till I do my V6 upgrade.

V6 with a 5sp would be a great swap and with a little taller rear gear would give the best of both worlds (quick and fuel mileage) plus the cool factor.
