Most excellent post. I agree these types of posts should be "stickies" or even have their own section, possibly "Detailed mod's with images". Don't know anything about running a site such as this though.
Also, like the name of your LUV! McLUVin :P

x2... a Tech Write-Up section would be pretty awesome.

Can anyone say if the original poster had a 4x2/4 and what type of Trooper he pulled the steering box/pump from (4x2/4)?

I'm trying to do the same install but I don't know if I have to find a 4x2 to get my parts from or if any Trooper will work.

Thanks for any info!

Great info for the swap!

Sure thing, bcg...

First and foremost, ALL parts I needed came off of an 86 Isuzu Trooper (with the round headlights) that had the 2.3L 4 cylinder G200 engine.

Parts that I took from that vehicle:
-Steering Gearbox w/Pitman arm* and U-Joint from steering shaft**
-Lines (high pressure and return lines)
-Reservoir (make sure it has the black rubber seal and filter inside)
-Power Steering Pump w/ "V" belt pulley
-Bracket (1) for reservoir
-Brackets (3) for AIR PUMP on driver side of engine.***
-ALL bolts for everything I took off (proved to be a VERY smart move)

*Make sure you know the size of your Pitman arm. I found that the 86 (and possibly earlier Troopers) had the correct size for my LUV whereas the 87 and up were too short.

**The steering shaft on the Trooper is notched at the end and the notch slides into a U-joint unit. It is this U-joint unit that has the splines at the end which fit onto the steering gearbox. You MUST take this U-joint unit, the flexible coupling on your LUV will NOT mate up to the input shaft on the Trooper box. I had a guy at the yard cut it out with oxy-acetylene.

***The reason that you're taking the brackets that hold the air pump on the Trooper's engine is because the power steering pump is on the passenger side. On the LUVs, this is where our distributor is, so the big bracket that holds the pump can't fit there. This is why we have to use the air pump bracket to hold the power steering pump on our LUVs.

For most of you, once you have these parts in your garage you'll be able to put it together after modifying the brackets a bit. When I say modifying I don't mean welding... I don't own a welder and I got through this whole project without needing one. I mean you may need to drill a hole here and move the alternator bracket there, but thats about all. This should be good enough to get you started and I will post more in depth stuff as you ask it. If you need, you all can even e mail me at BEETLEVH@aol.com. In the subject line put "LUV Power Steering" or something so I don't think its spam.

hey luvinit,
That was a nice p/s install. I'd like to do it to my truck. If I could find the time. Do you know where I can get a perfomance cam for the 1.8 eng? I see that you live in Redmond. I'm in Ashland, not too far. shoot me a line when you can. Thanks, Tony

the steering setup isn't different on a 2wd as far as i know, it should be the same process to swap em (anyone that owns a 2wd luv know?)

im doing the p/s swap to my 4x4 on payday, the other day up in the snow on Larch that steering wheel was whipping side to side so fast i could hardly keep the truck going straight-ish

anyone happen to know what year ranges of trooper had that same setup incase i cant find an 86-87?

Late 87 and up to what I'm not sure will bolt on but you have to use the early 87 and under pitman arm to make them work. I have a late 87 on my truck and had to get the correct pitman arm to fit.

thanks that helps a lot. wikipedia says the trooper generations are 81-91 (however changes were made in 87 so its pretty much 87 1/2-92), 92-97 and 98-05
so anythign 81-87 would be a bolt on direct swap i believe
86 the 2.3 became available and 87 the 2.6 became an option along with the GM 2.8L v6.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isuzu_Trooper

great source for model specific changes
the LUV one isnt bad either.

Are the pitman arms hard to find and is it a direct fit when installing the pump. Do you have to fab a bracket for the pump. Haven't been here for awhile but it is time to get started on my truck again.

These should help those who wish to do a Trooper power steering install.

Also the steering U-Joint is an early Toyota 4x4

I am about to go to the local yard and pull all the parts for the p/s conversion. I just wanted to make sure that the conversion does work on a 2wd model before i spend the time getting everything i need. I have a 78 2wd Mikado and would definately love the p/s. Thanks

Ok, I removed all of the power steering stuff from my 1986 Trooper with a 2.3 engine.

The box, pitman arm, adapter collar, resevoir, and pump looks ok but I have a funny feeling the rest of the parts I have differ from the parts shown in the above photos. The presure line on mine has a long steel tube that runs from the pump down to the lower rad support, then accross the front of the engine and up to the box. The steel tube portion of the pressure hose is like 2 feet long! Does this sound right? Also, my Trooper donor truck was missing the smog pump, two of the brackets were still there and I pulled them, will the smog brackets from my original 1.8 work for the swap or do I need to use the Trooper brackets?

Next question, do I need the Trooper crank and fan pullies or will all align ok with my Luv 1.8 pullies?

Do you have the model year or Toyota part# for the rag joint?

Here is what I pulled off of the 86 2.3 Trooper engine. See that long steel line between the pump and the steering box? Is that the style you guys show? I don't see that part in your pics.

Kinda looks like to me you just need to use that existing line or after you get things mounted the way you want just fab a new one the lenght and route you need.

I have yet to find my parts here.

Maybe so but I am not seeing a good enough match with my parts to others I see here to even make an attempt yet, I'm wondering if there are two different styles and I have the wrong one? I have all the parts in degreaser right now, once all cleaned up I'll do some trial fitting.

I was looking through the parts book available on this website for downloading. Yes their was a Luv that came with power steering from the factory. A late body style diesel. The diagrams show a good view of how the pump mounts and the brackets. I was not able to tell from the pictures, my fault, on how things mounted with every thing already mounted up. I am a visual kind of guy, but the finished product left me with too many questions.

Just a FYI.
