MUA-5 trannies for diesels were never importrd to the US, only MSG's. I suspect what you have found is a v6 gas tranny.

In other words, the MUA-5 would be difficult to mate to your diesel. You'd have to machine an adapter plate after you get the transmission apart from the engine, and you'd have to modify the bell housing for the starter.

That's the only way I know to tell. Here's what you're looking for, inside the bell housing. This holds the main bearing and countershaft bearing in place. You can count six bolt holes around the circumference. Some 4wd 4-speeds used six, and some used only four. If you count six, then your front case half will bolt up to an MSG-5 transmission from any Isuzu 2.2 diesel or 2.3 gasser, as well as some Impulse transmissions.

Here's my old transmission sitting on the front case of an Impulse transmission. On top is the rear case, and the dark plate in the middle--it's got all the gears and shafts attached.

Well, I still think you may have something wrong affecting your performance. Most folks I know who have this truck in good running condition say that it does well up to about 65 mph--not 50 mph.

I can drive it at 60 mph but as you know diesels run best at lower rpm's. The gearing for the 4x4 (4) speed is just to low, I doin't know your friends that say it runs ok at 65. I havee had 2 and 4 wheel drive and the gearing is definetly different.

all 4wd luv/pups are 4.11 geared, gas or diesel powered, 84/87 troopers have the 4.55s with one very rare model in 87 thats 4.11s
any 4wd Isuzu 1979/1985 is 4sp truck or suv,
86/87 is the years for the 4wd MSG 5sp up-grade to fit the 85 and older 4speeds, this trans can be sourced from 4wd pups and troopers in 86/87 other than the frunt housing and bearing retainer the rest of the trans is 100% the same gas to diesel.

as to the 2wds being geared different.......
luv/pups 81/87 2wd are normally a 3.73 with a 5sp
and fed emission MPG+ models are 3.42 with a 4sp
a "rare few" MPG+ models sold in CA that are 2wd 3.42 with 5sp

all the 5speeds 87 back in the luvs/pups and trops are a 14.5% O\D
my trop with 31" tires, 4.55s, and a 14.5% O\D makes 60 mph at about 2,600 rpms.
drop to 4th and its just about 2,900 rpms

running the big 31" tires makes my gearing very close to what 4.11s would be.
