all the pups use the 14.5% O\D 2 or 4wd if they have the 5sp

the hard to find one is the isuzu car that is RWD it has the same 2wd trans as the 2wd luv\pups. just a different O\D

in my quest to re-bearing my 4wd 5sp trans, :eugeek
ive found it would not be to hard to swap the 20~% car O\D to the 5sp 4wd trans.

the hard part would be finding the car trans, and if you want to run big tires the taller O\D would likely be over kill, possibly making less mpg with big tires. and dropping to 4th on grades that most would call flat land.

i know the turbo parts fit the 2.3L but i don't know about the 1.8/1.9 possible? maybe a no-go?

Code:
Gas      Turbo DSL     NON-Turbo DSL   Turbo Impulse
1ST   3.431       3.785          4.122            3.431
2ND   1.969       2.171          2.493            1.963
3RD   1.364       1.413          1.504            1.364
4TH   1.000       1.000          1.000            1.000
5TH    .855        .855           .855             .755

thank you SO much for that info, i had not been able to find the list of ratios on models :D

my buddy at work HAD a turbo impulse as his drift car for a while. not sure what became of the car but he still has the turbo/manifolds, sadly that was one of the two i can remember seeing running/driving

alrighty... so basically what that all comes down to is i need to find a p'up 4x4 trans. and run the size tires that would correspond with the gearing of the rear end to match the final drive ratio of the p'up (or where ever will put me at or near 3k rpm at highway speed so im not bogging down coming up a 2% grade)

the impulse O/D seems like it would a great idea but also be dang near impossible to find at this point as i can rarely find an impulse online in the pick-n-pull inventory. and as long as the p'up 4x4 5 speed would keep me rollin along at freeway speed i wouldnt have any concern with wanting anything more i dont race and i dont wheel its a daily driver.

re-did the ratios for the swap.. with my 4.10 rear, 28" (stock size) tires & the .855 5th @3000 RPM i would be going just over 70 MPH sounds perfect to me.
http://wahiduddin.net/calc/calc_speed_rpm.htm
VERY handy speed calculator. a lot of the other ones i found left out trans gearing.

David, you should tell him where you stole that juicy morsel of information. At least I did, when I stole it!

I think all EXCEPT the Impulse info came from Jerry (JLEMOND) at IsuzuPup.com. The Turbo Impulse specs came from http://www.isuzuperformance.com/isupage ... impjr.html
But that site's not coming up now. Glad I got it when I did.

Jack

well thank ya for the source of the info
so my best bet will be to pull a trans from a 2.3(carbed) 86+ p'up or trooper so i dont have to Lego a transmission together from 2, which i am way too broke to do. and find a set of 28" tires and call myself set until its time to beef the motor up more.

And then the next step will be to pick up a 2wd luv with a bad/or no motor to do an V8 swap in to make my play truck and keep my daily driver 4x4 reliable 8)

There needs to be some clarification of the tranny gear ratios listed in the above chart: the gear ratios listed as "gas" must be for a 2wd tranny, they are close to a Chevy LUV 2wd 4sp. The ratios for both the 4sp and 5sp gas 4x4 trannies match closely that of the listing for the "turbo dsl"- 4wd gas trannies had lower 1st-3rd gearing than 2wd.
These ratios were taken directly from various LUV/Trooper FSMs.

86/87 are the only years you will find a MSG 4wd 5sp that is a clone of your MSG 4wd 4sp, "just longer for the 5th gear".
88 they change tranys its a much stronger trans with HYD cluch, and has the 20% O\D

and then theres this list i forgot about. maybe the two charts to gether will make more since :?:
(some of these gear sets never came stat side) clicky on it to make bigger.

what all would need to be done different for a 4x2 trans swap? just bolt up, and shorter driveline?
