I did mine in mostly in 1/8' flats making up a box section to follow the shape of the original. I used 1 1/2'' black pipe for the tube that the shocks mount on. My welding isn't the greatest, so I am sure a well made 1/8'' 2x3 box would be plenty strong. Perhaps a little reinforcement at the top of the arch over the axle or use 2x4 box. It has been several years since I did mine, and I have hauled plenty of heavy loads and it held up fine.

I still think 1/8 would be fine. The 0.083 is inches, a little less than 3/32''. However, what are we talking, a couple of 6' lengths? How much difference in weight can there be? Do you have a welder that will easily handle 3/16''?
