I have a 1979 Chevy Luv Mikado and need a manual 4 speed transmission and have searched and searched but to no avail. Anyone know where to look to buy a re-built one? I am about to spend my first snow covered east coast winter (i just drove this beauty from California!) and do not want to try to navigate it with a bad tranny. Any suggestions would be immensly helpful! Thank you

Cheeks, just to clarify, you have a 2 wheel drive, and not a 4 wheel drive right?
If it's the 2WD, you can use a 5 speed out of a Isuzu Pup. Don't know the eact years, but if you search the site you will find several threads. I think you may need to shorten your drive line, as I think the 5 speed is longer.
I have a 4wd Luv and have done a similear conversion (but more work with 4wd).

Yes, it is 2wd 4 speed manual transmission. How difficult was it to shorten the drive line? Thanks for the response

Any reputable drive shaft place can do it.I would install the tranny and take it to them..that way you won't have trouble measuring the shaft..also make sure you get the yolk from the donor vehicle.

Try car-parts.com, plug in your tranny, it will list salvage yards in your area that have one.
The 2wd 4sp & 5sp are the same length, the 4sp has a long tailshaft , that is where 5th gear is on the 5sp. However, the splined yolk that slides into the 5sp tailshaft is larger diameter than the 4sp, so you need to mate the yolk to the rest of your driveshaft, the u-joints may or may not allow this, if not it will need cut & welded, $100 or so at a driveshaft shop. So make sure you get the 5sp yolk or entire driveshaft with the donor tranny. Any gas MSG tranny through '95 is the same, all are cable clutch, came with 2.3 engines after '86 or so.
