I have an 1980 4x4 luv and it starts fine and idles fine but i cant drive it for more than a quarter mile and it just dies. I've changed the ing. coil, spark plugs, points and condencer, the resistor, battery, fuel pump, fuel filters and i've cleaned the carb. I dont know what the problem is and i found this site and thought i might get some help figuring it out. Thanks

just had similar problem with my 79, removed fuel tank and cleaned sediment and scale from tank. the pickup tube is fairly small and sits down in a low area in the tank. this seems to have fixed my promlems at this time.

I have a fuel filter right before you get to the carb and it stays full all the time. But i do need to clean my tank. thanks for the idea.

My truck did the same thing and it was the alternator. The fuel pump will work off of battery voltage when you are cranking the engine but it wont work off of battery voltage when the truck is running. Check your voltage when the truck is running it should be over 13 volts at the battery. The manual says 13.8 to 14.8. Mine reads 14.4 idling.

The factory fuel pumps have a filter inside them. The end screws off.

When you crank it over to start the carb bowl gets filled up and it starts and runs until that gas is gone. The filter wont be drawn empty. I guess you could test it by cranking it until it starts then shut it off and remove the fuel line at the carb start it back up and see if its pumping fuel after it starts. I drove my truck to napa to get an alt and reg by cranking it to start then driving till it died starting it and so on only two or three miles each way took four or five starts, downhill on the way back I just shut it off and coasted once I got going.

I dont have a volt meter but the truck will keep running when I take the pos cable off of the batt. When it dies i can get it to start maybe once or twice for about 45 sec. but it will die again and then i cant get it to start again until the truck cools off.

Perhaps your pattern has diverted our attention from our A, #1 enemy, or a least after rust. LUV's have a weak link in the electrical system, the fusebox. The terminals the wires connect are riveted to the fuse holders. A little age and corrosion, and you get electrical intermittents. I solved mine by taking it apart and soldering the joints. Others have cleaned it with lemon juice, and others a new fuse box.

the coil runs off the battery so i don't see how it would :?:

check your voltage regulator! mine was fried.
i had changed out my plugs, wires, (and coil wire cuz it got cut open somehow), alternator, coil, fuel filters, and anything i could think of) soldered a piece of wire to replace tho one that broke inside the regulator between the two wire coils.
and that worked till the intake leak killed it again. it ended up being the EGR valve on my intake having a leak and making my lose the air suction through the carb causing me to get very little gas to the cylinders (it would puddle up in the intake manifold till it leaked out)
