If you're on a budget you can pick up a 9" from the salvage yard. Cut the stock axels and have then resplined. Cut the tubes off and weld on new ends That's what I did with my first one. It was fine to about 600 hp.

$175 31 spline 9" ford rear
$ 85 respline stock axels (or $300 new)
$ 60 axel ends
$400 coil over ladder bar setup
$60 wheel tubs

I'll probably be around 450 at the crank. Any insight on what vehicles I should be looking for? Other than pulling an axle shaft out is there a way to tell what spline count it has?

An early Mustang rear is close to the right width. Pretty much any passenger car axle will be 28 spline unless it is Hipo stuff. By the time you respline stock axles, and redrill them for the wheel pattern you want (assuming you get truck axles, car 9's are getting hard to come by) You will be approaching the price where new axles are just as cheap. No way I know of to do an outside visual on the spline count. THere is a correct width 9 and axles in the classifieds here at a good price...

Early Broncos also come with narrow 9". They are about 64" wide, most have 3.50 gears with a posi. They are more common and cheaper than the mustangs. If you plan on running larger tires on rear the truck bolt pattern proabaly isn't an issue and you can always upgrade axels at a later date. I've got one on my 69 camaro, it's been in there for over 15 years, several sets of tires behind a 454 w/5 speed and no problems.

I think I have about $800 in mine. I narrowed mine myself and it still cost that much. That is new axles, ring and pinion, bearings, seals and labor for assembling the 3rd member.
