in terms of "true bolt in 5 speed" to a 1979, 80 4x4 LUV, no there is not.

1986, 1987 are the only years the 5 speed MSG trans with a cable clutch was sold.
the O\D is 14.5% about 300ish rpms lower than direct drive 4th

the 5 speed trans is about 5" longer than the 4 speed.
the cross member for holding the trans must be modded
or maybe mod the cross member from the doner auto.
as well as a new hole for the T-case shifter in the cab.

any 4x4 LUV 79 to 82 has the same axils and drive train.
the 81 to 85 pup has the same 4 speed drive train and axils as well.

lastly the 84 to 86 troopers have the same axils as the LUVs and pups listed JUST WITH 4.55 GEARS in trops NOT 4.11s
84,85 trops have the same ol 4 speed.

there are no other gears in the USA other than 4.11 or 4.55s for the older 4x4 axils.

86,87 4x4 pups and troopers have the doner MSG 5 speed trans with the older cable clutch,
any auto with a engine 2.6 or bigger is the newer MUA trans it can be used but its bigger and a much tighter fit.

is there a compiled list of all the years/makes/models i can pull a 5 speed from? ive read so much information on this thread i got a little confused as to where i need to pull a transmission from.

i have a 77 luv with a 76 engine and 4 speed trans. i want a 5 speed. i understand i have to swap out the yolks .. thats fine. which 5 speed is the least amount of modification that has the shifter in the same location as the 77 luv ?

:smt017

.....2wd by the way

81/85 pups 81/82 luvs have the weaker 5 speed, granted its stronger than the old 4 speed sold in the 70s luvs
there a 17 spline out put shaft.

86 was the first 2.3L engine year, thus the 2WD 5 speed trans was up-graded for it.
from this year up, its something like 26 spline out put shaft.
this up-graded trans was sold from 86 to 95 when the 2.3L was dropped from sales.

there are two other isuzu autos that where sold with the up-graded 2WD MSG 5 speed trans.
the early GEN1 amigo and one of the Isuzu cars. if you can find the car trans, it has a taller O\D gear.
these two autos where only sold with the MSG trans for a few years in the late 80s.

now for a twist, 87 was the last pup year, 88 was the first truck year.
starting in 88, the drive line size changed on all truck models, so to find a yoke that works with the trans and your older drive line, it must be from a 86 or 87

oddly i will note, that ALL 4X4 Isuzu models luv, pup and trooper sold 79/87 have the right yoke for the 86/95 trans, that will fit the older drive line.....

if the trans is out of the auto.
other than the spline count, theres no way to tell the older and newer 5 speed transes apart.
the case on them is 100% the same.

awesome thanks. i was thinking i could only pull from a pup. and after using craigslist/craiglook i couldnt find much of anything. and i really dont want to finish putting my truck back together with the stock 4 speed to just have to do it all over again for the 5 speed. id rather wait and get the 5 speed the first time. doing things twice is for the birds 8)

having a 2WD
if you can find a doner pup with, trans, drive line, and rear end from a diesel. that would be best to help with the high rpms.
gassers where strange, they mixed and matched rear ends over the years.

2WD diesels mostly have 3.73s a few are 3.42 with a 4 speed version of the 5 speed, it was a packege for getting better road MPG.
look out :!: the very rare auto tranys have 4.11s

the trucks 1988 up are 4.11 4.30 or 4.55

LOL also, any auto originally sold in CA state, can have a very funky drive train.
they pared the 3.42 with the 5 speed in the pups 8O TALL GEARS :!:

well my truck is just gonna be for cruising around once i get the hydraulics on. so what rear end would be ideal with the 5 speed? i dont want crap mpg but this wont be driven daily so its not as big of a concern to me

your saying that you have the HYD clutch set up :?:

99.9% of these MSG 5 speeds are cable clutch

Finding one with a hydraulic clutch is going to be your problem. I don't know of any Isuzu truck transmissions that used the hydraulic clutch other than the California spec P'ups in (I think) '86 and '87. The Impulse had a hydraulic clutch, and would be perfect--but they're very rare. pezfallout was selling one from a turbo Impulse, and it would indeed be a bolt-in swap for you. I don't recall if it sold.

I have a 1976 Luv and have a isuzu pup 5 speed tranny. I notices that the to operate the clutch, it needs to pull instead of push. Any clue what i can i can do to make it work? will the stock rear end work with the tranny? Im new to mechanicing, and have a tight budget. any help would be great.

81/87 5 speeds commonly had 3.73 gears.

88/95 5speeds have 4.10 some where a Isuzu axil others where a GM one in those years.
also the drive line is a different size in these years.

81/85 its a 17 spline on the out put of the trans, 86 to 95 its a 26 spline.
all cases for all of these years is dead on the same, looking at the out side :!:
the only i dentafyers to the year is, the splines and the number of teeth on the driven speed-o gear on the rear passenger side of the trans.

The P'up transmissions had cable operated clutches. Is your clutch hydraulic?

Yes, it is hydraulic. How easy is it to change over to the cable? Again, Im not mechanically inclined. But i can weld if needed.
