So uh, my wheel cylinder exploded.

Yeah.

I'm not too happy about that.

The brake shoes are SOAKED in brake fluid, and now i've got a decent sized puddle under the rear driver side tire. Not only that, but I have to special order my brake shoes. How stupid is THAT?

Some pictures.

Walked out to the truck to warm it up before we left and saw this puddle under the tire. At first i thought it was water from melted ice or something, but a double check told me it was brake fluid.

I'm hoping to have the brake shoes in on monday morning. if not, that means Jekyll/Hyde is going to be down for a few days... And just when i was planing to

BTW, I found a name for my truck...

Not that I would ever do this again but I had a problem similar to that years ago on an old Chevy truck I had. I am a believer in never "Skimp" on steering and stopping components but at that time I was a young airman in the Air Force and TOTALLY BROKE so I kept my brake shoes and cleaned the hell out of them with Kerosene. Never had a problem. If you need the truck NOW it might be an option until the new shoes come in. I know, I'll get some criticism for how unsafe this is but it helped me out in a pinch when I HAD TO HAVE the truck.

A young Airman in the Air Force that's broke? Been there (with two kids too) and done that!
Just to add, I did the same thing with cleaning but followed it up with a wiping with denatured alcohol to remove any left over kerosene.

If you are real desperate and no shoes wash the shoes in hot soapy water then rinse i hot water as any petroleum product is a absolute NO-NO.

Keep in mind that brake fluid is a detergent and is water soluble not petroleum (solvents) soluble.

hmmm, i didnt think about that. i'll have to give it a try and see what happens. i just sent the wife to get the new shoes anyway as i might as well get them replaced and get it over with. But, yeah i'm just hoping that at least ONE option is available...

The mechanics at work have cleaned them up (gear oil) with brake cleaner instead of replacing them.

Hey, does anyone know what brand of brake components were factory issued for the Luv trucks?
When i cleaned them up, i found an "Akebono" stamp on them. Is that the OEM brake shoe manufacturer? 8O

I cleaned the shoes like Tj said, and they look like it could do the trick and i can put off replacing them for a few months.

So far, one wheel cylinder is done, and i'm debating, (or rather im trying not to be lazy) whether i should bother rebuilding the other side while i'm at it. but it's cold outside, and rainy.

ok ok, i'm glad i did take a look at the other side. the wheel cylinder there was starting to fail.

one side is done, but i'm planning to flush the brake lines and re-bleed the master cylinder with fresh fluid. hope i will be done tomorrow...

You made the right choice...always do both sides if you can.

well,

dad came over and helped me bleed the brakes.

kept questioning my every move. i told him we needed to bleed the master cylinder first, but he kept asking why...

anywho, here is a good question that i'm having trouble figuring out.

when installing new shoes, you have to take the adjusting rod at the bottom down to zero right?
i did just that, and had a HELL of a time trying to fit the drum over the new shoes. i couldn't turn the trum AT ALL.

i'm used to the older 70's chevy brake systems, so is it that it just needs to be driven for a bit and it will be better?

also, i know these brakes are supposed to be "self-adjusting", but i'm not too sure how it works. anyone care to explain?
