Well, with our tax money, we are hoping to get my wife another car. Not because the metro is busted, but because we realize that we need something that we can use for trips and ride just a bit more comfortably.

SO, in light of this, I was hoping to get some suggestions from you guys as to what would be a good choice?

This is the criteria, however, and I cannot change it (per the wife)

Good Mileage
4 Door
AC equipped
4 Cyl
Manual Transmission

Brand doesnt matter too much, but I prefer not to get a Saturn, Honda, or Volkswagen. We were looking at a Corolla, but havent decided.

so, suggest away! (please)

(oh, and let me be the first to say : :smt079 )

i've owned my share of honda civics. and while they may be good cars, because they have the reputation of being good reliable cars, they get abused very easily. not to mention the fact that it's rather hard to find a good clean one that hasn't been touched by a wanabe rice rocket racer or that has been modded to "jdm" spec.

just to give you an idea, i have seen close to 93 ads for hondas, and of those 93, i only found 1 in near decent condition.

spending limit is close to 2000. maybe a little more, but it awaits to be seen.

Toyota Camary ( i think that's how it is spelled)
you would need to find and older one for that price range but they are very good and dependable cars with a very long life.

I would go with a Honda or a Toyota. My wife's 98 Corolla has 228k and has just now started using a little oil between changes. We have driven the sh*t out of that car and it has never let us down. It even got her home a few nights ago through a foot of snow! Same thing for a Honda Accord I used to have. Wish I had not sold it. You said you did not want a Saturn, but In had one of those for about 2 years and had no complaints other than it seem to eat coollant temp sensors, it seems like I was replacing one every 3-4 months. If you do buy a Saturn, go with the SC2 model (double overhead cam), The SC1's are a little under powered.
Any hoo, I don't think you will go wrong with a Honda or Toyota.

i agree with maduro-man stay away from the sc1 at all cost. and I also am not a fan of hondas but if you do find one that hasnt been thrashed they are good cars. toyotas have a very dependable track record. as far as vw goes make sure you get the 5 speed for sure, the automatics are known for goin out at around 150k. my sister had a hyundai elantra and she tried murder that car but it just wouldnt quit she didnt change the oil for 55,000 miles. i finally heard that she hadnt changed the oil and i crawled under it myself and the oil was burn to the dipstick. i was in shock that the lil thing still turned over!!! keep us informed on any other cars you may find and be considering

Subaru. Nothing Supercharged, turbocharged or souped up. They'll run forever, and they stick to the road like glue.
Friend of mine has one that's got 400K on it. Of course, he does take care of it.

I'm a subaru guy but I wouldn't buy a 2000 dollor one with out know how to fix them. If you pay someone to work on them it can cost you some coin. The timing belt at 120,000 miles is about $900-1200. But they are great car.

If you have been happy with Metro you might look and a Suzuki Esteem.

yeah, we have been looking at a toyota corolla. an 89 to be exact. supposedly, its an all-trac model, but i'm skeptical until i see it tomorrow afternoon.

i was thinking about the camry, but i know for a FACT that they are a PITA to work on. oh, i went back to look at the honda civic i found, and turns out it's a salvaged tittle. figures....

I don't really have any trouble working on ANY car, so long as there is a FSM to go with it. i learn pretty quick.

i spoke to my wife about the esteem, but we want to get something just a little bigger.

i have seen a few sc2's that look good, but i'll have to turn on the charm to talk the sellers down. they want close to 2600+ for a good low mileage one. and while it may be worth it, i won't know until i learn a little bit more about them

And i'm going to stay away from volkswagen. too much trouble, too expensive, and for the most part, if they haven't been taken care of WELL, "german engineering" is worthless.

My son got an infiniti G20 95 or 6 I think w/140k +/- for about $2500 and it runs like a top. We have had a couple of issues but nothing expensive.

VW Jetta over the Golf.with the TDI engine They do make a Jetta wagon. 4 Cyl turbo engine has a lot of power and can be fun to drive. Great fuel mileage, drive train good... Little things go out after 1ooK knobs, color on door handles... If you get Recaro seats you will love them, Regular ones ok..... Ask around about the local dealers,,, some cam be SOB's some great.

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

According to the 2009 Consumer Reports magazines annual auto issue the two worst used cars to buy are the VW's and the Chryslers a.k.a Crapsler. Toyota and Honda were on the top of the list.
This was based on reported break downs, cost to repair and maintain, recalls, ect.
