I was in 4 high tonight and heard a clunk then another clunk, I thought I dropped my spare tire, then got out and thought I had alot of snow build up in the wheel wells, now I'm thinking it was the right(passenger) CV axle that went clunk. If I take it out of 4x4 and unlock the hubs does the CV axle still rotate? What do I need to do to check if it was the CV shaft or not?

just look under the front end, if the cv boot is ripped then its time to replace them.
you could just replace the boot but its a temporary fix IMO.

besides its almost the same price for a new joint or a whole axle.

if you can afford to have a shop do it its better, PITA as far as i have seen.
better to give them the headache i say.

Never changed one on a LUV, but I've swapped out a few on a Ranger. Go to O'Reilly Auto for your new one. You can get the limited lifetime warranty there when you buy one.

Check it the same as you would u-joints.
Lock the hub, get the front end off the ground. Any turning of the shaft should produce the exact same rotation in the wheel. Slop means worn joints. I just replaced mine, made things a lot better.
Not too bad. If you're gonna do it, have a die for a 14X1.5mm. It took me two days to do it, but only because I boogered up the threads on the ball joints, measured them as a 13, and couldn't find a die. lol, measure twice, run around town once. Other than that, it's just separating the ball joints past removing the brake rotors.

Get the shafts without the inboard cups... replacing the inboard cups is a PITA.

that might help too.

To answer your original question, if it's in 2wd and the hubs are unlocked, the axle doesn't turn. If it still clunks, it's not the axle.

Usually bad CV joints will 'click' when you're turning.
