Tore the 4.3L V6 apart today and think I might be able to get away with new rings, bearings, etc. and a really good boiling. One cylinder might cause me to hone them, but otherwise was surprised with what I found. It has a Crowler cam part no. 03141 (I am waiting for a reply from them on the spec's), been bored 0.030 over, straight pushrods and an aluminum intake. I might get away re-building it for a lot less than I first thought! What I would like to ask, is if anyone can identify this intake for me. I have been all over the internet but no luck. Is this one a good one, stock, crap, or what? The numbers off of it are 9242, GM14010257, and W13. Plans are to build my own headers as Karen directed me to some kits she saw online. Isn't it great having a wife with a bit of mechanical background to look for things to help out? She even mentioned putting the Ford 302 in the LUV and going with a Flathead V8 in the '53 F-100 but from what I see, it is too large (size) to fit easily in the LUV. She comes up with different ideas that I take into consideration. Well here is the intake:

the intake you have is crap.

thats just a stock 4.3 low perfromance aluminum intake that accepts the stock rottenchester "Dual Jet"

I mean, unless your into 2bbl rochesters.

I believe the 3141 was a step up from the compu-pro 1, so I would imagine the duration and lift isnt going to increase that much.

the thing to remember about said cam, is that it is designed to be COMPUTER FRIENDLY - Thus it has that wide 114 lsa for a correct vacuum signal.

While it is an OK cam, I would say that you could do alot better, since you are going carburator anyhow.

My suggestions, would be to look for a cam in the 212-218 @.050 lift for duration, keep the lift to around .500 and use an LSA from 110* to 112*

THAT WAY......... you can get away with a set of Z28 springs that i might shim up a few more pounds on the seat. should be good to an easy 5500- 6000

I am a guy who knows nothing about what works good with what. Just put the parts on a table and I can assemble the engine, drop it in, prime it up and crank it! This is why I ask sooooo many questions for advice. So what can I put on/in my engine to get decent performance for an affordable price? Anyone have part numbers, brands, etc., that you are pleased with? If I can get a list together, I will give it to the wife so she can order parts over a few months. In the meantime, body work, electrical, and replacing engine seals/gaskets on the 53 F100 which will keep me busy. Of course putting her back together too!

Don't chunk the factory intake though, carbed 4.3's are hard to find...

If you want the stock look and really confuse people look for a Marine manifold as they are four barrel Q-Jet style

sooo............. looking at your numbers.... its an 80 thru 85 3.8.... not a 4.3

its got bores based off of the 305.... so its on the 229 cube side.

which to me, kinda screws the whole deal. cant much in the way of decent valves in the tiny bore.... heads are going to be the key for the power here.

I dont know if you want to pursue this build... for a moderate increase in power you might be OK, but it will be hard to make anything real in NA form.

i would continue looking for a 4.3, but im up to help you for whatever you decide.

So the 3.8 also had those offset crank sections for the connecting rods?

I think I will measure everything tomorrow. I do remember when I had the engine running in another LUV, I could spin the tire (singular) from a start with little sweat. Of course with such a light truck, that dosen't mean a lot.

Put some LSU guys in the back. See if that helps.

Tried that, but their only good for a 100 yard sprint the run out of GAS! But what acceleration!!!!!
I measured the valves and got : Intake at 1.84" and exhaust at 1.5" diameters. I did get some information off of the heads: L1479 GMT 347 13 471598 3 on one and 0778 GMT 685 171585 5 on the other. The bore measured 3.75" near the top.

3.8? That sucks!
My Christmas might not be over yet. I have just been offered an Oldsmobile Bravado with the 4.3L V6. The only thing wrong is there are no heads and some body damage. I need to see if my heads can fit it and maybe use the chassis and drive train on my LUV. Oh yea. Total cost for this deal might be $100. I love family at Christmas!!!
