 last night my luv motor when boom after i heard a tapping noise like the rockers hitting hard and than the truck shut off and the oil pressure light went on but i added oil that morning b4 i drove it to work. well today i didnt feel like doing much :( but i did want to find out so i just took off the valve cover and the oil was a greyish color and it had water. so i think the head gasket went out . could that be caused by it running hot? speaking i just changed the head gasket last month . i know how to fix that and im gona do it the right way so it will hopefully take only a couple of days not weeks like last time. i just hope the bottom end is fine. the truck turns over but it doesnt start. any other ideas :?:

Did you have the head checked for flatness last time it was off?

it may be rare, but check the block itself too.

i highly doubt it, but check the oil passages in teh head and make sure they are clear. i had an older chevy that had some gunk built up in the oil passage of the head and it made my engine run rather hot. blew the head almost off teh block. it was weird...

Mine are spoken for right now. Call some shops and check prices to have yours rebuilt. I paid 1k for one and 1100 for the other.

Be careful about those remanu-fart-ured engines. I hear they are horrible with gas!
Compare replacing the engine with the same/similar one with a 'swap' and driveline. This way you get a "new" driveline and keep the truck. Of course decisions must be made in part on how much you want or like your LUV, what plans you have for it, etc., etc... We will help in anyway possible.

are you SURE your block is gone?

you might just be able to rebuild it and save yourself the expense of doing an engine swap.

IMO, it would be less costly and would be a great way to learn your engine inside and out.

When i was 15, i had to rebuild a 283 chevy SB and i didnt know enough about engines to work on them. but i learned the hard way and with a little help, i know how an engine ticks and what i need to do to keep it running.

i say, find yourself some crankshaft bearings, new rings, and make sure the crankshaft is still good. A reputable machine shop will be able to salvage most cranks even after dealing with a no oil situation. (i had that happen in a old 78 civic i used to own. the camshaft grinded against the oil pump gear and the shavings went everywhere)

rebuilding the head isnt a big deal, and you can probably do most of the work yourself if you have the time. Have the head surfaced at a machine shop and the rest is cake.

hope you can do it!

I'll talk to my guys at checker and see if i cant help you find the parts. That is, if you want to go this route.

I think if you do the work yourself, you'll save about 800 bucks vs getting a remaned engine

I pulled these numbers off of checker/O'reilleys website. I have yet to buy a product from them that has failed me.

5028M - Sealed power main bearing set PN
51209 - Piston rings
BS40460 - Rear main seal set
OS30390R - Oil Pan gasket
94007S - Timing set (includes chain, sprockets, tensioner, adjuster, and guides
TCS45113 - Timing chain Gaskets
HS8621PT1 - head gasket set

so far the totall for this stuff is just over 330.00

some optional stuff you may want/ need
M139 - Oil Pump 99.00
31627 - Distributor (although this would be the perfect time to upgrade to electronic igniton) 112.00 w/ 14.00 core
10754A - Carb kit 30.00

add in about 300 (hopefully less) that a good machine shop will charge you to check the crank, hone the cylinders, and machine the head, and you are still in less than what a remaned engine would cost.

Plus like i said, you will learn your engine inside and out.
EDIT *
Found you a Factory Service manual on ebay runs about 20 bucks w/ shipping. Worth every penny if you do your own work.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1977-Che ... Literature

hope this helps!
