Fuel pump relay is not engaging or the keyswitch itself could be causing this. Lots of threads on both throughout the centuries...

Fuel pump makes no noise when in the run position. With that being said and the fact that it shoots fuel out when cranking, has the fuel pump gone bad?

If it is pumping, I lean towards no, it is good, which is why I said check the relay and the keyswitch. If the relay doesn't latch in, it will die after the initial start. Could be the relay, could be the keyswitch not engaging it. I don't have a stocker, so I can't tell you what wires to check, just trying to point you in a new direction since you are eliminating the things to check one by one...

after searching some older posts it might be important for me to mention that the GEN light is lite up on the dash.

The fuel pump should be OK. You just aren't getting power to it in the RUN position. I don't know the year of your LUV, but mine is a 1980. To trouble shoot it I removed the cover from the passenger fender to get at the relay. I pulled the relay for the fuel pump (which has five wires) and put a jumper wire in it to bypass the relay just to get the pump working. My relay is good, there is a glitch in the wire somewhere. Look at the diagram below to see where I put the jumper. This let me crank and start the engine AND it kept running. After, I ran a wire from #5 on my fuse box straight to the fuel pump solving my problem. Replace the relay so your gauges will work.

Looking at the plug from the top, the wires are facing away from you. Ignore the dots and put the jumper from Slot D to Slot E.

........Slot A Slot B
Slot C Slot D Slot E

It's a 1979 LUV. Just to double check, I went and checked the fuse. It's fine. I will check the relay tomorrow. Thanks for all the help.

Sounds like it's definitely an ignition switch, generator, regulator, relay or wiring problem. I know that sounds like alot of possibilities but since you mentioned your generator light is on I would start at the fuse box and chase back from there. Look for anything corroded, burnt, loose, and make sure you check wires where they bend around anything. Make sure they haven't been rubbed through the insulation and are grounding out or even broken on the inside of the insulation by giving them a light pull. There is an adjustment for the contact in the Regulator for the fuel pump but I really don't think that's would make your gen light come on but I'm not totally sure about that one. Keep us posted with what you find.

Thinking back a few days.........
When a buddy and I were messing with the timing, the GEN light started to flicker during this process until it eventually just remained on.
Does this point me in any specific direction?

I've got a Haynes manual on the way. Maybe this will help me locate all of this stuff I'll be looking at.

AHA!!!!!!!!!!

As explained above, the alternator supplies power to the coil of a relay powering the fuel pump. A white with a red stripe wire runs from the W terminal of the voltage regulator to both the generator light and the fuel pump relay. The fuel pump won't work unless power is getting form the alternator to that wire.

The fuel pump relay is under a cover on the passenger fender.

Have been reading about the fuel pump relay on previous threads and just wondered if there is a replacement that will work without rewiring something.

Your relay may be fine. If the alt is not charging properly, the relay won't work...

So, take out the alternator and go have it tested?

Not a bad idea, it isn't to hard to remove and most Parts stores will check it for free. It would also be a good idea to check the connections of the wiring that LABMAN mentioned above.

I almost feel ashamed to tell how my problem was solved.

I started to take the alternator off and noticed that the wire connector to the alternator was a bit loose. So loose that I touched it and it came apart. I reconnected it and fired it up. The GEN light went off and it will run as long as I can stand the exhaust. I would like to say a big thank you to all that offered help. You can bet your life savings that I will be back with more questions. I will be posting pictures of my new LUV here soon.

I've had my butt kicked by loose wires and blown fuses before. No need to be ashamed. Glad you got it running.
