I'm currently putting my '79 Luv motor back together. I just got the head back from the machine shop and discovered that the camshaft pin (for aligning the sprocket) is missing. I haven't talked to the shop yet as they are closed. I'm just wondering if anyone out there knows of a source for these in case they can't find the original one. The original Chevy part # is 94008199.

Can' you just locktite a small piece of steel rod in the hole? I don't think it was tempered as it was use only to align the two pieces. You could just make sure the pin hole and alignment hole line up and bolt them together. The bolts take the stress.

I used to buy parts from Bill when my daughter had a geo storm
I did not see any, but I did a quick scan. Our engine was a DOHC

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

I'm probably going to give this method a try tomorrow as the machine shop said they can't find the pin. I can't decide weather to use locktite or JB weld. I'd hate to have the pin drop out. It looks to me as if the old one would have been pressed into the cam. I can't figure out how they lost it.

You should be able to get these at most hardware or auto parts stores. You just pick the closest size and grind it down smaller so it just fits. They are called woodruff keys or just plain shaft keys. Yes they are used for alignment only as the torque of the tightened pulley bolt drives the cam.

just a word of warning. i managed to break the camshaft end where the pin mounts by tapping in the original pin and accidentally tapping it at an angle. Take a bit of extra care with this. I dont know if my cam was defective but...

The machine shop has access to parts that you and I can not find. It is their supplier that they get their parts. When I worked at a automotive machine shop, we could almost get anything... Generic roller rockers, guide plates, lifters and more. Even the name brand stuff like Crane, ARP, TRW, TRUE ROLLER, and more. They should have the same type of place. That is where all my Luv engine stuff came from. They lost it. They should replace it. They should have removed it or told you to remove it when you brought your head to them. Like over head rocker arms and such... I marked stuff like that and put in a bag if someone left it on. I guess on one cares anymore. They have to remove the cam to do the valve job but they do not have to remove the cam gear. They also have access to salvage yards we don't know of too.
