ok, so after having pulled the head, and taking it to the machine shop, it turns out the head is warped beyond what they can ("legally") cut it. looks like im going to have to find a new head. anyone out there have one that is ready to drop in (with relative ease?)

Can't you have i straightened? They can do that. Might be pricey, but definitely cheaper than a new head. Also, if a head gets too warped, it causes misalignment of the cam bearings.

well, they want more to fix the head than i paid for the whole truck! im planning on sending it to a friend in california to see if it can be fixed.

Either way, im still gonna spend money on the head. IMO, it's relatively cheaper to do a pop'n'swap than to put money into this head.

That's to bad. Just keep your eyes open for a parts truck and you can probably get the entire thing for less than getting the head fixed.

ok, so here is where i stand, i've pulled the head again and stripped it, i have managed to find another head from a donor engine that i found locally. the block was blown, but the head was ok.

these pics are during the removal and show the extent of the leak on the driver's side, and the used head i found.

so, in the meantime, the head sits in the truck bed until i can get it sent to the machine shop and have it planed and have the valve seals replaced.

OK, so i just tore the head open, (camshaft, valvetrain, etc)

(yeah i know im dragging the whole head job out too, but please bear with me)

Machine shop is quoting me ab out 25 bucks to do the valve seals. seems like a good deal, but in light of the simplicity of the head and engine, should i just do it myself and save myself 25 bucks?

to get this head planed, it's gonna cost me 35 bucks. im trying to cut costs, but not at the expense of my truck.
Any advice?

also, someone had mentioned they have the torque specs and diagrams for the g18 head. PM maybe?

first thing we need to knoe is does this shop warantee its work. meaning that if they replace the seals and something is wrong are they gonna get it fixed?
if that is the case then in my opinion it is well worth 25 bucks to put someone else's head on the chopping block, especially if you've never done this before

I agree.

If you can afford it you should definitely have the head surfaced as well. If you don't do it now you will more than likely do it later. That's my philosophy anyway. If I have a head at the shop, guides, seats, mushroom seals installed and surfacing.

well, this place i dont trust just yet, and i would rather hang myself than blame someone else. either way, i just pulled the valves out, and MAN its a good thing i did. the no.'s 3 exhaust valve is whiter than casper the ghost. im thinking i did manage to leak coolant into the cylinder. maybe not alot, but enough to coat it.

on the intake side, the no. 4 is just COVERED in crud. im sure the seal is failed for sure.

all in all, it doesnt look like it should be too bad.

anyone have the specs on the springs? how about those torquing specs and pattern?

SO,

After nearly 2 weeks of downtime, The Beast LIVES!

I have gotten everything in place and installed sans the smog pump and a few vacuum lines, and at the moment (and i pray it is going to stay this way) everything is running PERFECTLY. :D :D :D    :D :D :D

The annoying stumble that I was experiencing when the engine was cold is gone, no more jumpy temp gauge needle, and the constant smell of evaporating coolant is NO MORE.

So, in light of these events, there is only one thing i can say:

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE HELP AND TIPS!!!!

I say you give yourselves a pat on the back, not only for helping out a fellow LUVer, but for helping me keep my Luv on the road, where it belongs!
thanks again!

pics of the finished job will be posted soon.

Hey, sorry about the delay in the head bolt torquing sequence, but for future reference, and so that the search function will bring it up:

Head bolt torquing sequence
Head Bolt Tightening sequence
Head bolt tightening order

10 4 2 5 7
8 6 1 3 9
Front->

Oh, and congratulations on getting the LUV running!!! :D
