The stock rims have a small tab, spot welded about 5 1/2 inches CCW from the stem. Does any one know what it's for, I am going to grind them off before painting is this going to be a problem. gpengine

Are you talking about the mushroom looking tabs that there is 4 or 5 of them on the face of the rim? If so, those are there to hold the hubcabs on. Wont hurt anything to get rid of them but then can never run the caps.

Are the mushroom tabs just for the dog dish factory hubcaps?
The full-sized hubcaps don't make contact with those tabs...

Correct, the tabs hold on the dog dish caps, the Mikado caps cover the complete rim.

thanks to those who replied . this 81 has a single little tab on all 5 wheels, about 6" from the valve stem which looks like it maybe for an electrical connection when the rims were powder coated, but this is only a guess.

My wheels have them too...I think their use is to hold the valve stem cap while checking tire pressure
