Yahoo i finally got my 5 spd. installed and boy is it nice even though it was a pain in the behind it was worth it in the end.
Now it's time for the Trooper upper a arms and the power steering with new tie rods then onto the new axle shafts and Trooper rotors.

I will post pic's as i go along and will post pic's shortly of the Trooper 5 spd. in the truck as well as the modified X member and park brake bracket.

whats the true rpm change.

ive "heard" the gas 4x4 5 speed has like a 18.5% O\D

where as my diesel 4x4 5 speed trans is a 14.5% O\D about a 300 rpms change.

if it is, it whould be worth it to me sence im forced to run 4.55 gears
yes i can change it to 4.11s :( but when i pull a load id be beggen for a lower gear to get
i have two gas 4x4 5 speeds just laying around :ebiggrin :ebiggrin

OK OK i will try to do a write up but first i need to find out how to make the pics bigger.

Also FYI i used a 87 Trooper trans and the clutch is the same in the Trooper and the Luv 4X4 .

Now as for the gearing the Trooper had 4.56 and 225/75/15 tires The Luv has 4.11 and i think 195/14,s.Or a 25.5 tall tier on the Luv and a 29 tall on the Trooper meaning they are about the same final gear ratios. Now put the trans in a Luv and put on a 29" tire and your final will still be in the 3.73-3.90 but now you have a overdrive.

I do not know the actual overdrive ratio but if you figure at 10% at 3000 would be 300 rpm change at 20% would be 600 rpms and i don't have a tack in my truck so i don't know how much.

As for the trans it,s a bolt in but you have to cut the X member out move the fuel lines cut the floor board, Just take your time, the front Trooper drive shaft bolts in ,and cut the rear drive line 5.5-5.75" the slip yoke fits from the Luv. The pain i have right now is the shifter hole is to far forward and the shift boot pushes the shifter out of 2-4-R but it's about to get fixed i will get pics and do a better write up a little later.

TJ, I found with my 5 speed conversion, for the main shifter I bought a generic shift boot from Kragen Auto. It comes iwth a metal plate and screws that help keep it in place. I would also like to point out, you will need to modify your e-brake pulley. Since the crossember is taken out, it will have to be remounted under the cab.

Ever get a chance to get the larger pics? I'm really considering this swap for my pickup and want to collect all the info I can before I start.

Your truck looks great, nice work on the conversion!

My E-Brake pulley is in the stock position as i built a bracket for the e-brake linkage and bolted to the t-case that was in almost the exact spot it was when on the original cross member.

I use Photobucket to post my pictures. I just preview the picture first and then shrink it if necessary. Though if you are already using another site to post your pics, I know it may be time consuming to switch over.
I need to have the hole for the old 4WD shifter welded. I ran out of money when I was working on the project (that was the last thing needed) and I ended up using some duck tape.

The trans X member is the one off the donor Trooper that i sectioned 3"s on each side then dropped it to fit the chassis more like stock.

Thanks for attempting to get the larger pics. What are the other sites that you say they are working on? Maybe I can just check them out there.

Would you say that the LUV is now freeway capable with the 5 speed?

I really like my LUV, but all the trails I want to ride on are ~100 to 200 miles away and the freeway is the only way to get there. Needless to say my pickup is scary on the freeway and can't nearly go 75mph comfortably for a long period of time.

Thanks again.

so what did you do for the hydraulic clutch system? I was thinking of buyin early luv hydraulic clutch parts and using them. just wondering what you would suggest since you've done this before?

He used a '87 MSG tranny, which is cable clutch, so he didn't have to deal with hydraulics.
