OK, my 2005 chevy 3/4 ton P/U with a 6.0L engine (71,000 miles) has been running hot in stop and go traffic. On the highway it runs fine but in town the temp goes up and down. Idling it runs hot until I run the RPM's up. At first I thought it was the thermostat and was going to replace it but after talking to a couple friends who have similar trucks they had the same problems and it was their FAN CLUTCH. I checked it and there is practically no resistance in the clutch whether the engine is cold or hot. It completely free spins with no resistance. I am usually a fairly level headed guy but this damn thing is making me lose my temper.

I've gotten everything removed and can get to the nut on the back of the clutch, I'm a pretty decent sized guy, 5'10" 220 and have had all I can put on it with all my weight as well and can't get the F!@#$%^ clutch nut to break loose. This looks like the simplest task in the world but I cannot for the life of me get it to break loose. Has anyone out here ever replaced one of this type? I'd appreciate any help. I hate paying a mechanic for something like this.

BTW, I was just on a different CHEVY site I googled and there has been alot of fan clutch problems doing this same thing but no recall so far. Damn my luck.

I did one a few years ago on a Trailblazer. I had to heat it up with a torch (carefully of course!!!)

is it left hand threads like a dodge??

That didn't damage the seal in the Water pump? I just might have to try that tomorrow since nothing else is working for me.




No it's right handed threads. After fighting it for a while I checked that. Keep the ideas coming guys. Thanks alot for the responses, I really appreciate it.

I think I would try an air rattle gun. Mabey some kroil or sumthing. I think the tourch would work too, the block should work for a decient heat sink.

That didn't damage the seal in the Water pump? I just might have to try that tomorrow since nothing else is working for me.


I was afraid it might but I did that over a year ago and the guy is still driving it. If I remember right I had a garden hose close by, I heated it carefully then cooled it with the hose.

Are you sure its right threads? I usually use a air chisel and back it off, usually its left threads.

Thanks for the replies guys, I will be heading out this evening if I get off work in time and I will let you know. I have the replacement one out there and I "thought" it was right hand threads. I will definitely look again and verify. It's seems like the air rattler and maybe the torch will be put to use tonight....if I get off work in time that is. If not then definitely tomorrow.

I got the bastard! On my home from work I stopped at NAPA and they actually have a tool set just for this purpose. It's a Spanner wrench and two wrenches made to fit most of GM's fan clutches. IT's almost $80 but it's a pretty simple tool set. The spanner wrench is nothing more than what looks like a Big pair of Scissors with two pins in the end to hook into two of the four holes on the water pump pully. I made one in about an hour and but still couldn't break it loose. I tried slipping a piece of pipe over the end of an adjustable wrench but that was just a pain in the backside to control so I welded a 12 inch piece of rebar to an adjustable wrench and that gave me the leverage I needed. I found out I need to increase the size of my Combination wrenches. The nut on the clutch is 1 3/8 inches. I have sockets that big and up but not in wrenches. An actual wrench that size would have probably made it a little easier. Oh well it's done and no more overheating problems so far.
