In regards to 9" rear ends, I will attempt to answer both of the above questions, backspacing and Broncos.

Backspacing on wheels simply means the measurement taken from the edge of the inside of the wheel to the inside flange, the area where the wheels meets the brake drum.
The most common backspacing for rear wheel drive cars up until the mid eighties is 4 1/2".
Most front wheel drive and later models, Mustangs, Dodges, Chevies, etc are spaced at 6".
Example: A Maverick Grabber V8 rear end is an eight inch and is 54" wide. By rewelding the spring perches to Luv specs, you can mount this rear end in a Luv, then by using late Mustang wheels with a 6" back space the wheels will fit under the fenders.
Now for Broncos, the rear ends in all "small" Broncos, from 1966 until the last one made in 1977, are all the same, some came with Equa Lok, Fords name for locking rear ends, while most were open type. The axles all interchange and have 28 splines. Almost all of them are either 3:50 or 4:11 ratio, supposedly the only exception to this was some of the very early 1966s 6 cyl engine came with 4:56s, but I have never seen one of these. The rear end is about 60" wide if I remember correctly. But they are a really strong rear end and worth narrowing to fit a Luv!
Hate to get long winded, but I hope this answers your questions?
Did I get the spline count right this time OldRob? Last time I goofed and said something about 29 splines.

This is a simple answer.

Just think about it, he said with a Grabber rear end, just weld the perches on and run a 6 inch back space. Next would be to cut and weld a 9 inch housing, if you measure correctly you can put any backspacing in you want, meaning from 1 inch to 16 inch's.

sry guys i have no idea about this. it just seems to me that if u just cut the houseing. the backspace would still be the same speaking the end of the axel is still going to be the same with all the same brake stuff on it and what not. you will just have more room to put a wider rim on there which means more rubber

Just as Luvrv8 said, make the rear end fit your needs! I currently have a 9" in my 78 that is 50" wide and I use wheels with a 3' backspace (BS) This is as narrow as my stepside allows, as well as the springs themselves. I had previously used the "Grabber" rear end quite successfully. The problem with 8" rear ends is finding any gear ratio below 3:00-1, while 9" are available on e-bay as well as other places, with almost any gear ratio you want.
But again, the rear end has NOTHING to do with backspacing, this is ONLY a measurement of the wheels. Almost all wheels are going to be 4 1/2" or 6" BS.
I ordered some chrome "smoothie" wheels from Summit that were 15 X 8" with a 3 1/2 BS to use on the rear end of my Luv. And I use 15 X 7" with 4 1/2"-BS on the front, also "smoothies", and with the "baldy" hubcaps I get away with six bolt wheels on the front and 5 bolt wheels on the rear, with the hubcaps on, no one can see any difference!
Hope this helps, good luck,

Lets try this one more time. These are just numbers and in no way reflect the actual numbers of a LUV.

My fender well from outside to outside measures 60". I want to run a 10" tire.

With those numbers lets say my axel is cut to 50" from drum face to drum face. That would mean I need 5" offsets to complete the job.

Lets say the axel is cut to 49", that would mean I need 4.5" offset rims.

Lets say the axel was cut to 48", I now need 4" offsets.

See where this is going?

Well, you are on the right track, but you'r still missing one measurement, that is where the wheel flange is in relationship to the OUTSIDE of the wheel. For example, a 8" wheel with a 4' offset (BS) is going to stick out another 4" from the hub, so if you use a 50" rear end, flange to flange, with the above wheels your total width is going to be 58". (Plus whatever the tire sticks out beyond the wheel)

However on a Luv, this won't work with the above measurements! The wheels will hit the springs. So I use a 50" rear end, w/ 3 1/2" BS, this means I have an extra deep wheel because the wheel is going to stick out from the hub 4 1/2" Add the 1" my wheels bulge over the edge of the rim and I have a total width of 60" from o/s of the the tire to the o/s of the other tire.

Hope this helps, good luck,

And to the other owner, no new hat with a haircut!

Like I said Iwas not intending him to use those numbers, just trying to get him to understand basic numbers and how they relate to back spacing.

Thanks luvrv8,

I know I sometimes get carried away on my writing, and I appreciate your help,
Since I live in Riverside, we should all get together sometime, I mean all of the Luv owners in California?

Duplicate the factory axle with a 9" (52")and run a 4" backspace rim and a 275 / 60 / 15 tire . There will be a pop quiz on this soon .

i am burning this into my head !!! :onfire: i was thinking about doing it ur way. so i dnt have to venture into suspension mods as i feel like im not ready to tackle this yet. heck its taking every brain cell i have to figure my rear end out. i know about motors and trans and what to bolt on to get more hp but gearing and suspension i have no clue

There are alot of guys going fast now a days on 275's . Hell i ran 235's at first . This is not my way , just wanted stock suspension for classes at the race track . In your case ( math challenged ) i would buy the rims and tires you want , set them in the fenders squarely without the rearend and measure from back of rim to back of rim and build of that . The Mavrick/comet/grabber might also be the way to go . Others have used a Dana 44 from a mail jeep , might consider this while you have the truck blown completely apart .
