I'm coming back to this... see, I got oil seeping from spots where the head and block meet. Enough to get the engine dirty and drip oil on the ground, it's annoying. No evidence of water in the oil or vice versa, so the gasket seems OK... if I figure out how to get to all the bolts, what if I back them all out and then re-torque to spec?

Unfortunately on 72-75 I think you have to remove the cam and carrier and undo timing components (risking breaking those unavailable timing tensioners  ) can someone verify? I've never seen one of these engines apart, and all the manual says to do is to 'check the torque on the head bolts' before adjusting valves, etc...but it doesn't seem simple to do.

I suppose it's possible they're uneven now, causing leaks. Now, of course I already have one bolt with a stripped head (done by me, thank you very much ... ) so I'll want to replace that one. I assume eBay for head bolts?

well I guess this may answer my question about where to get a new head bolt, I'll have to check this out. Other questions are still good...

see above; I think getting a bolt is not a problem any more, I need help with getting the gasket to seal with respect to oil leaks, e.g. somebody who has had this problem and repaired it.

get a can of the (right stuff) spendy comes in a can like cheese whiz but you can use it to make your gaskets, don't need the original gasket ... and this stuff works, i have it on my luv and no leaks... its made by Permatex...put it on and go....

So much for reading the datasheet where it says "not for use as a head gasket"

Hell I'll figure out something, the truck is totally driveable it just bugs me to have an oil leak...my OCD I guess. Thanks for the advice guys.

ive never touched a stock luv engine, but what type of headgasket is it?

if its a composite gasket- then the surface should be dry and clean, headbolts installed with sealer and torqued in multiple steps to the final value.

if they are multilayer steel then things change, many require that the block and head be finished to a certain finish (usually very smooth) from there the surfaces should be clean and dry - the difference this time is that each layer of MLS should be coated front and back with Copper gasket spray, OR painted with 3M head sealer. These get torqued in steps to final value then released...... re-torqued, then released and done one final time.
