I just aquired a 1978 chevy luv(series 8 ) as far as i know and have a kind of peculiur problem, the steering on the truck is non power steering and at low speeds the truck makes a very loud rubbing/squeaking kind of noise, i think its the steering that needs to be lubricated as it has been sitting in my grandmothers barn for the past 12 years and i have recently took the truck in to fix up and use as an everyday commuter. The noise first started happening AFTER i cahnged the brake pads after it made the drive from san andreas to danville going all non-freeway routes, i dont think it would have an effect on the steering but i would be most appreciative if someone could help me out.

if the truck is stoped and you trun the wheel to the right at a certain point it will start to become tough and noisy but at anything over 20 its quiet. its possible but i think it might be the oil inside the steering gear box thats got some floating corrosin that mgiht be getting stuck between two of the gears, but i cant really be certain without taking it apart

Jack the truck off the ground then test by turning, check the wheel bearings, check tire rotation, grease the upper control arm shafts, with teh weight off the front you can feel if there is a prob. in the box, check for rubbing when turning the wheels by hand.
