Kinda slow here so I thought I'd provide an update.

Well I finally got the LUV back to the track. I'm running a 461 BBC with 13:1 compression. The tunnel ram has been pulled for a Holley MPI system. Different motor, fuel system and a hood. Otherwise the trucks the same as last fall.

The truck ran a best 6.43 @ 110 mph with a 1.49 60ft and a 4.17 330 ft (1/8th mile). Not bad for a street legal LUV running through the mufflers. All and all the truck ran great concidering it was only its second time out, and first time on E-85. I only had two prolems. The truck was losing fuel pressure at the stripe. When I took some fuel away it slowed so I'm thinking once I get a bigger fuel pump it'll pick up a little more. Also the drivers not very consistant, seems I've lost my touch over the years so I'll need more practice on the tree before I become much of a threat to the other racers.

Side benefit. The race motor on E-85 runs cooler than the old Stock 454 on regular gas. And at 1.69/gallon compared to 7.99/gallon for 105 race gas it seems to have some long term savings. 13:1 and 600+hp on $1:69 pump gas.....gotta LUV it.

You do need about 30% more fuel with E-85 so if you're thinking about trying it, jet big.

History on the truck.

Awesome!!! :D The truck is running good. Don't be too hard on yourself about not being good on the tree. I have been racing for the past 5 or 6 years and I suck at the tree. Once in a while I get lucky and have a good day. But more than not, crappy!! Keep us posted on the progress.

Anyone in Iowa running E-85. I assume it's readily availible down there too. The turbo guys around here are starting to get wise to it, but not a lot of N/A guys running it yet. I actually was a little concerned running 13:1 on it, but from what I read it sounded do able. I was concered on the first run but it seems to love the compression and runs cooler to boot. Near as I can tell it makes the same power as racing fuel as long as your fuel system is capable of feeding the extra 30%.

Not sure the savings is completely offset by the added cost for a fuel system, I guess it depends on how much you race. But hell as you all aready know if your gonna be different why not be completely different. Anyone can race a Nova, Camaro or F-body Mustang, but a street legal corn feed BBC LUV..............no thats different.

There is a guy I race with from Clear Lake, Iowa with a 65 Falcon using E-85. I talked to him a year ago. I think it was his first time out using it. Seemed to pick up a bit in ET. A year ago I almost went to E-85 but decided to stay with 110 gas. I heard somewhere that it is better to go to the plant instead of a gas station. Because at the station it is not always the same mixture. There was a plant here in the town I live in but it closed up earlier this year. I know the guy who was manager there and I talked to him about sponsoring me. I talked to a guy who he was sponsoring with free alcohol. He would get E-100 and then mix it with racing gas to get E-85. So I figured if I would have to buy racing gas I might as well stay with it. And you have to mix it at the plant as they can't let is go out the door as straight alcohol. BOOTLEGGING!!! 8O

As about your comment about racing something different. Last sept I went to Denver for the ET Finals. I friend of mine that races a Pro bike was out there. On sunday we were standing there watching some racing. He said to me "All I have heard the announcer say Camaro this, Nova that, Chevelle here, but I have only heard one Luv"!!!! I told him that is why I have it, it is something different. :D

You should haul your Luv down here some weekend to race it at Tri-State Raceway. www.tristateraceway.com There are a couple guys I race with that come down from Owatonna every weekend to race. And it would be awesome to have 2 Luvs racing!!!

I love your truck man, that blue is sex. And those stacks... Awesome.

Also, Horsepower TV converted their 383 to E-85 and it went up 30 hp. Just a thought.

I think Straight alcohol costs more than race gas. I do know several people that going to switch to E85.
I have not talked to them this year. They were expecting good results with it, at a cost savings... Just find a station that sells it.

Practice, and more practice. Seek some advice from some other racers, but be careful of some advice. You may need to borrow some slicks to see if the help. My best friend did that on his comp car and what a difference it made.

IT costs roughly half, but it takes twice as much, so the gain is in a little more horsepower...

A good friend of mine runs Methonal, and his main reasons for switching was for concistancy. Since you use twice as much fuel. Changes in weather (Air) have half the effect as gas. Also the fact that it runs much cooler eliminates the engine temp varible when your cool down times decrease as the rounds speed up during eliminations.

My main reason for running E-85 is because its cheap, runs cooler, and is readily available around here. I have a 69 camaro I've had since High School (25+ years) and I plan on bumping up the compression and switching it over. Figured I'd do some hard core testing with the LUV first.

Unfortunatly I probably won't make it down to Iowa this year. Budgets tight and with the current enconmy I took some some short cuts on the bottom end with used parts that could trailer it on short notice, so I'll be staying close to home this year with limited racing. Years ago I hit the track regularly and even have a collection of trophys down in the basement. But work took over to the point I sold everything except the trailer and some used parts. Bought the LUV as a project and dug out the old parts. Added a few new parts and slowly getting back into it. I must admit that I only bought the LUV because it was priced right, but now its starting to grow on me and it gets more than its fair share of attention......far more than the old Vega or Cutlass.

Oh ya, the truck hooks good on the Hoosier DOT QuickTimes. Seems to be more of a suspension adjustment. The 4 link bars are still in the same holes as they were back in 1991 and its only made three races since, with a different motor each time. I'll move the IC forward for the next race and see what happens.
