In the late 60' early 70' The factories used resonators to "soften" the sound of thee exhaust. OldRob is right, but it is a precised sound too. Pipe size will effect the noise. Look at all the Dodge diesels and Ford diesels with large pipes and some with no mufflers. If you have not heard them do a quick google on them.
I used what were called "turbo" mufflers. These had nothing to do with running a turbo... Just what they were called. Still a nice sound but quieter than glass packs, cherry bombs and whatever that had in the 70's. I think the longer the muffler the quieter it is. No scientific data, just me.
