Hello,
I am new to this board as a member, been reading your posts for a while now during breaks at work. Great information. I have finally cleaned up some home computer problems so I can start asking questions. Never use your work computer for too much personnel stuff. Here is my current situation. I have a '80 4x4 and have been fixing it up over the last year or more. When I first purchased it, the passenger side front axle was missing the cv joint boot and was clacking. Paid a garage to replace that axle. but now the 4x4 lock-unlock knob is very hard to turn-needs a wrench. The original axle on the drivers side is easy to turn. I have a shop manual, but the drawings aren't clear enough to see what would cause this. Can anyone provide advice on how to fix this and is this easy to fix. I am fairly mechanical, but don't have a garage so any repairs have to be done in a couple of days and not leave the vehicle looking like a junker. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Sounds like the grease has dried up, click on the link below for a rebuild how-to.

Sounds like the garage that did the axle did something wrong so they need to fix it. If you haven't complained to them that would be a good place to start.

It is hard to tell without tearing the hub all apart and putting what is wrong. My guess is that they either didn't grease things properly, put it back together wrong, torqued something down too tight, or maybe got the shims on the axle shaft wrong.

Thanks for the suggestions. I took it back to the garage even though it was beyond the 12 month warranty. After opening it up, they said that a part wasn't put in correrctly. They are ordering a new part and will fix it for free. A little too simple.

Very nice. It is good when a shop stands by their work, since it seems we hear too many stories of shops that do not. Be sure to spread their name around, other than screwing up in the first place they deserve some credit for fixing their mistake even outside the warranty.

I ended up putting some super wench hubs on my Luv. Before putting them together I put some "anti-sieze" in the piece that locks that hub. It works ralther well. =)

I thought I should finish this. The Goodyear shop at I St. & 11th St. in Sacramento offered to fix the hub, but couldn't find the part. They ordered new Warn hubs for ~$200, but the hub was too big for the inside of my rims to fit over. I decided to look around and some members on this website offered to sell me used hubs. One person mentioned the company AVM. They are located in Brazil and make replacement hubs for many 4x4 vehicles. I contacted them, but they only sell through distributors, Superwinch in USA. Contacted Superwinch and they were very nice and could include some hubs in their spring order from AVM. I tried to contact AVM to find other distributors, but they closed for a couple weeks over christmas. Finally, they gave me two distributors, one in Costa Rica and another in Australia. Costa Rica didn't have any, spring shipment again. Don Kyatt Spare Parts in West Melbourne had two sets of hubs for the 1979 & 80 4x4 Luvs. I bought one of the sets and had it shipped for $174. Goodyear installed them and a week later I had a check for the full amount of the hubs plus shipping. Don Kyatt is associated with TerraTamer parts and his website is donkyatt.com. Everything worked out well, just took information from this board and a lot of persistence. Thanks.

And Kudos to that Goodyear shop for owning up and taking care of a mistake they made. :smt038
